The Position

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Genentech.

The Opportunity

The Department of Discovery Oncology at Genentech is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for a highly skilled Principal Scientist, Lab Head, with an interdisciplinary background. We seek an exceptional candidate with profound expertise in oncology, cell biology, and signaling pathways, complemented by experience in computational biology and novel machine-learning methodologies aimed at enhancing target identification and drug discovery. This position will spearhead a dynamic research group dedicated to discovering new targets for oncology therapies.

The successful candidate will integrate efforts spanning the interface of functional genomics, molecular biology, and disease model engineering with computational methodologies. Working closely with our AI/ML group, drug development, translational medicine, and clinicians, you will help identify new therapeutic hypotheses and advance transformative medicines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Research Leadership: Lead and manage a high-performing team that discovers and focuses on novel targets in cancers, ultimately accelerating target discovery and drug development for oncology.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with internal experts across computational and experimental disciplines to integrate in silico, in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo model systems that drive innovative therapeutic strategies.

  • Innovative Drug Discovery: Leverage novel machine-learning methods and advanced computational tools to use multi-omics datasets, identify new targets, and refine drug discovery pipelines.

  • Translational Impact: Generate high-quality, original research that advances our understanding of cancer biology as well contributing to the development of new therapies for oncologic indications.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Serve as a central liaison between computational and experimental teams, fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring that data-driven insights are effectively translated into actionable therapeutic hypotheses and drug discovery and clinical strategies.

Who You Are

  • Educational Background: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Computational Biology, or a closely related field.

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years post-Ph.D. of productive postdoctoral training and/or industry experience. Your record should reflect high-impact publications, patents, and successful project transitions.

  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in cell biology, cancer research, computational biology with exposure to/ leveraging AI/ ML, large data analysis for target discovery. Experience in integrating functional genomics, molecular biology, and disease model engineering to drive drug discovery in oncology is essential.

  • Leadership and Collaboration: Exceptional leadership abilities with a proven track record of working with multidisciplinary teams, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative spirit to work closely with cross-functional research teams.
