Description
The Director of Safety is part of Husky's Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and is responsible for the administration, development, implementation and communication of safety policies, programs, and procedure to ensure the Terminal's compliance with federal, state, local and contractual regulations. This role requires a strategic leader with strong communication skills who can foster a culture of safety across the organization and the industry. The Director will lead and represent safety initiatives within the facility, while mitigating risk and working closely with our represented workforce to insure industry adopted safety regulations are adhered too. - Develop and implement comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and training programs aimed at eliminating occupational injuries, illnesses, fatalities, and financial losses.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, OSHA, EPA, and industry regulations.
- Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate safety hazards swiftly and effectively.
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of all Safety Programs and initiatives.
- Collaborate with the VP of Operations to develop safety and accident prevention goals, and regularly monitor and report on progress.
- Manage and operate within approved budget limits, ensuring efficient allocation of resources for safety initiatives.
- Develop, communicate, implement, and monitor proactive accident prevention and safety programs in accordance with government regulations and Husky Terminal's Workplace Health and Safety Policy (WHSP).
- Create and administer safety plans and necessary training for managers and maintenance staff to conduct regular safety inspections. Report any violations to appropriate management and ensure timely resolution.
- Conduct regular inspections to monitor terminal safety and compliance, reporting any violations to management and overseeing their resolution.
- Maintain relationships with external organizations, such as fire departments, mutual aid societies, rescue teams, and Port Authority to ensure information exchange and mutual assistance. Participate in related professional organizations.
- Investigates serious accidents, reviews all injury reports, determines root cause and recommends future preventative measures. Monitor the implementation of corrective and preventative actions related to incident investigation and management, audit controls and report deficiencies to Husky Management.
- Analyze and communicate accident trends, statistics, and loss ratio information promptly and accurately to relevant staff.
- Oversee the workers' compensation program workforce and administration under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, in partnership with Human Resources to develop accommodations as needed.
- Manage general liability claims impacting third parties and Husky Terminal customers.
- Represent Husky at Joint Area Accident Prevention, Area Accident Prevention, and other PMA safety events that impact operations and compliance standards.
- Identify safety equipment needs and communicate them to the appropriate Husky staff and workforce.
- Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses, accidents, and exposure factors. Prepare comprehensive reports for management review.
- Conduct CPR training with staff
- Lead monthly Safety meetings for the terminal
General Liability Claims
- Investigate and assess general liability claims, including gathering information, conducting interviews, and reviewing documentation to determine coverage and liability.
- Evaluate and manage claims by analyzing the facts, determining exposure, and setting appropriate reserves.
- Negotiate settlements directly with claimants, attorneys, and insurance representatives to achieve cost-effective resolutions.
- Prepare and submit detailed reports and documentation to support liability determinations and settlements.
- Collaborate with internal teams including finance, maintenance and repairs, and operations to manage claims effectively.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures throughout the claims process.
- Maintain accurate records of claims activities and ensure timely communication with all parties involved.
- Provide recommendations for risk mitigation and process improvements based on claims trends and analysis.
- Assist in managing litigation related to liability claims and coordinate with outside counsel as needed.
- Stay current on industry trends, regulations, and best practices related to liability claims management.

- Attend required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies, and procedures; and actively participate in the Husky's Emergency Preparedness program and activities

- Bachelor's degree required in Occupational Safety, or a related field.
Related experience:
- At least 10 years of experience in a safety leadership role, preferably in marine terminal
- At least 3 years of experience in general liability claims management, preferably in marine terminal
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:
- CPR Instructor Certification Required within 90 days of employment
- Certified Safety Professional
- Competent Person - Fall Protection
- OSHA 5410 Certified
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of terminal, stevedore and vessel operations and equipment, physical and security
- Knowledge of Maintenance and Repair activities that occur on a container terminal.
- The ability to analyze collective bargaining agreements and interpretation of intent, spirit, and terms of contract to apply on the job safety standards.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state OSHA, S. Coast Guard and other applicable codes and regulations.
- Knowledgeable in insurance policies, liability coverage, and claims handling procedures.
Technical Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have

- Working knowledge and ability to use computer for data input, mining, analysis, visualization and trend identification
