LOCATION: John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital DEPARTMENT: Stroger Nursing Professional Development SHIFT: 8:00AM-4:00PM The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on Cook County Health (CCH) policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at CCH. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. JOB SUMMARY NON-UNION The Nursing Education Program Coordinator oversees the development and coordination of the Nurse Residency Program (NRP) and for maintaining current updates on patient care instructions throughout Cook County Health (CCH). Coordinates the education and curriculum for NRP working toward program accreditation. Develops, plans and implements and evaluates the NPR and clinical rotation programs. Provides oversight for project management, student placement, and graduate student placement and preceptorship. Oversees Affiliate contracts and organization of clinical rotations, orientations and ensures computer training is scheduled each rotation for affiliate students and instructors. Provides process oversight to obtain and maintain continuing education and nursing education planning committee. Serves as a resource and internal consultant for nursing and allied health personnel as necessary. GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES Collective Bargaining
- Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals
- Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings
Discipline
- Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels
- Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Supervision
- Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices
- Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Management
- Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH' systemic development and success
- Discuss and develop CCH system policies and procedures
- Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Coordinates the Nursing Residency Program (NRP) curriculum, planning of cohort curriculum, scheduling of classes, graduation ceremony and all aspects of the program
- Works to ensure program meets requirements for accreditation and completes application for accreditation and ensures maintains requirements to maintain national accreditation.
- Serves as a preceptor and mentor for NRP students, graduate students and all nursing staff.
- Collaborates with inter-intradepartmental administrative staff to enhance educational programs for NRP students and enhance staff participation.
- Coordinates the planning and implementation of special programs utilizing outside agencies.
- Evaluates the adequacy of NRP educational resources and products related to defined goals annually
- Ensures students receive NRP evaluations to evaluate the program as required and as needed.
- Communicates with skills lab staff and coordinates training using this platform to enhance training opportunities and competencies for NRP students and other nursing staff.
- Coordinates all skills lab training platforms for NRP training platform and education platform.
- Oversees maintenance of Affiliate contract agreements and ensures they are current.
- Oversees that student nurse prerequisites are met for clinical rotations
- Oversees the organization and coordination of clinical rotations, orientations, and ensures computer training is scheduled each rotation for affiliate students and instructors.
- Incorporates research outcomes to modify educational offerings.
- Utilizes a quality improvement monitoring process to promote changes that enhance educational and performance outcomes.
- Participates in departmental and system activities to enhance the overall performance of NRP students including appropriate documentation.
- Maintains accurate attendance records for all participants.
- Assists with quality improvement programs.
- Assist with the development of standards of care, policies and procedures.
- Conducts staff in-services on clinical equipment and new procedures and standards of care for NRP students as required
- Maintains professional competence by keeping abreast of changes in nursing practice, concepts, teaching modalities, standards, and trends.
- Oversees the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of patient education programs of the system.
- Coordinates systematic update and review of patient education used throughout the system.
- Develops up-to-date patient education as needed throughout the CCH.
- Maintains professional certification in appropriate area or specialty.
- Attends seminars and workshops in appropriate area or specialty.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is exempt from Career Service under the CCH Personnel Rules.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university, is required (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
- Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment, is required
- Five (5) years of nursing experience with three (3) years of experience formal teaching staff or students, is required
- American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification in area of specialty or must obtain and maintain an ANCC certification within one year of starting employment , is required (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, is required (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)
- Must be able to work flexible and/or irregular hours to complete hospital initiatives , is required
- Must be able to travel to all CCH affiliates and ACHN clinics as needed, is required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited college or university, is preferred
- Management Experience in a unionized environment, is preferred
- Program development or program management experience, is preferred
- Experience and knowledge of working in Magnet Recognized facility, is preferred
- Certification by American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC), is preferred
