Senior Principal Front End Engineer - gCS CC Data & Solutions Engineering

Genentech
United States, California, South San Francisco
Mar 08, 2025
The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we have initiated an exciting journey to bring together and further strengthen our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new, central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). gCS is on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world. We stand at the beginning of an exciting journey.

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count.

The Data Solutions and Engineering group within Computational Catalyst is dedicated to transforming user interactions with our systems and products, emphasizing intuitive, innovative, and effective visual interfaces that simplify user interactions and drive increased user adoption. As a senior member of our newly established front-end engineering team, the Principal Front End Engineer will be instrumental in shaping our user interface strategy and developing sophisticated front-end solutions that align with increasing development velocity and common standards for the organization while maintaining user satisfaction. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams, scientists, product managers, UX designers, and business leaders to implement front-end solutions that captivate end users and boost adoption. Our goal is to craft and deliver user-centered, accessible, and impactful experiences.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, this Principal Front End Engineer will play a pivotal role in defining and executing the front-end strategy across the Catalyst organization, refining front-end development processes, increasing development velocity, and ensuring that the user interface is a fundamental driver of product success.

The Opportunity:

  • Lead the development of the front-end engineering strategy, ensuring alignment with product goals and business priorities, while advocating for best practices and educating the team.

  • Oversee the end-to-end development process across multiple projects, ensuring robust, high-performance, and user-friendly outcomes, while providing technical mentorship and leadership to the team.

  • Conduct code reviews, optimize performance, and gather technical insights to inform engineering decisions while actively participating in projects as an experienced front-end engineer, contributing to the development of user-friendly applications by maximizing expertise in front-end technologies and UI component creation, with a central focus on the user interface.

  • Collaborate with UX designers, engineers, scientists, and cross-functional teams to deliver cohesive, impactful solutions in a dynamic environment.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and engineering best practices to continuously improve development methodologies and deliver innovative solutions.

  • Establish and maintain frameworks and standards for developing scalable and maintainable front-end applications, fostering a collaborative and efficient codebase.

Who You Are:

We are looking for an innovative and hands-on Front-End Engineering leader who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in building and optimizing UI components and a deep internal knowledge of front-end frameworks. You will be someone who excels in solving sophisticated engineering challenges and leads by example, guiding team members and advocating for exceptional front-end development and best practices. We are looking for someone who can bridge the gap between business objectives, user interfaces, and technical constraints, ensuring seamless integration and execution of innovative front-end solutions.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, with over 12 years of front-end engineering experience or an advanced degree with equivalent experience, and possess critical expertise in front-end frameworks like ReactJS and Vue.js, with familiarity in Svelte and NextJS as an advantage.

  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of modular design principles and improved runtime performance through micro front-end architecture, GraphQL, and WebAssembly integration. Proficient in CSS frameworks such as Tailwind CSS for creating responsive, visually appealing designs.

  • Successfully built and maintained a robust UI component library, enhancing development velocity and ensuring consistent, reusable components, while actively contributing to the development of enterprise-level, user-friendly products with seamless and engaging interfaces.

  • Proven ability to balance technical innovation with business requirements, ensuring scalable and impactful engineering solutions. Experience in integrating AI into applications and development practices is a plus.

  • Provide technical mentorship and leadership to front-end engineering teams, fostering professional growth and maintaining high coding standards. Experience in contributing to open-source frameworks further showcases a commitment to community collaboration and continuous learning.

  • Outstanding communication skills, capable of articulating technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, including executives and technical teams, ensuring effective collaboration and understanding.
