The Library Page is key in ensuring that library materials are well-organized, accessible, and in good condition for patrons. This position is responsible for shelving books, maintaining library collections, assisting with basic patron inquiries, and supporting library staff with general tasks. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and enjoys working in a structured environment.

This seasonal position requires up to 20 hours per week, including weekends and varied hours. The Allen Public Library is temporarily located at the former Rountree Elementary School campus: 800 E Main St, Allen, TX 75002, USA


Essential Functions

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.
  • Library Material Organization: Sorts, shelves, and arranges books and materials using the library's classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric). Ensures proper order, alignment, and spacing of materials to maintain an organized collection.
  • Collection Maintenance: Regularly checks shelves for misplaced items, relocates materials to eliminate overcrowding, and straightens materials to enhance accessibility.
  • Patron Support: Assists patrons with locating materials, answering basic directional questions, and referring complex inquiries to appropriate staff. Provides guidance on library equipment such as self-checkout stations, the library catalog, microfilm readers, and copiers.
  • Library Upkeep: Ensures the tidiness of public areas by retrieving misplaced materials, straightening chairs, and preparing the library for opening and closing.
  • Library Displays: Assists in creating engaging library displays by researching themes, gathering materials, and decorating designated areas to enhance the patron experience.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • High School diploma or equivalent and no previous work experience.

Work Schedule
19 hours per week, weekends, varied hours

Overall Physical Strength Demands
Light - Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

  • Collaboration & Teamwork - Working alongside library staff to support daily operations and special projects.
  • Problem-Solving & Adaptability - Addressing misplaced materials, resolving minor technical issues, and adjusting to changing library needs.
  • Technology Use & Data Entry - Utilizing library software, catalog systems, and digital tools for organization and inventory tracking.

This position is ideal for detail-oriented, organized individuals who enjoy contributing to a structured, community-focused environment.

General Supervision: Work is typically reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards. Autonomy is granted at the service or program level. Work is subject to general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
