University Development's purpose is to support the mission of the university by raising private resources to enhance financial support for students, faculty, programs, and facilities. University Development provides leadership and centralized services to all development offices throughout the University, serving as a focal point for annual giving, application development and IT support; campaign management; constituent programs; corporate and foundation relations; donor relations; gift planning; gift services; industry relations; marketing/communications; parents giving; principal gifts; prospect management, research and analytics; regional programs; scholarships and student aid; talent management; university events; and volunteer engagement.

Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station in Chapel Hill, NC.
The Director, Prospect Management is responsible for leading and enhancing
UNC-Chapel Hill's prospect management program in close partnership with the leadership of the University Development Office through the directive management of fundraiser portfolios to maximize fundraising outcomes for the university. The Director reports to the Executive Director of the Prospect Development department, serves on the department leadership team, and manages a team of prospect management staff.
Essential Duties:
A. Strategic Prospect Management
Exercise thought leadership and innovation in the field of portfolio management best practices and in the development of portfolio assignment methods.
Serve as a thought and operational partner with the Schools and Units team in the directive management of fundraiser portfolios.
Exercise authority to ensure fundraisers are working with the most appropriate prospects and that portfolios are optimized.
Develop and implement a comprehensive prospect management system that supports major and principal gift fundraising efforts.
Oversee the delivery of four critical client-facing portfolio management services: training, portfolio analysis, portfolio reviews, and client service.
Establish and maintain prospect tracking protocols, ensuring timely and strategic movement through the donor pipeline.
Develop and implement guidelines and policies to support effective prospect management and portfolio optimization.
Leverage business intelligence and analytics capabilities to benefit the university development community.
Monitor and analyze fundraising performance metrics, providing insights to enhance cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Develop and maintain knowledge of applicable information technology and how data are structured within the development database; ensure the integrity of prospect data within the development database.
B. Stakeholder Management
Identify client business needs and develop appropriate products and strategies to drive business outcomes.
Oversee the office's participation in the annual fundraiser goal-setting process.
Oversee the delivery of consulting to maximize the use and value of prospect management tools.
Deliver a comprehensive approach to resourcing fundraisers.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with fundraisers and collaborators across the university development community.
Serve as a strategic advisor to fundraisers on best practices in prospect management.
Design and conduct training sessions for frontline fundraisers on utilizing prospect management tools effectively.
Work closely with campaign leadership to ensure prospect strategies align with institutional priorities and campaign goals.
Collaborate with colleagues on prospect pool analysis, prospecting, portfolio management, portfolio analysis, pipeline management, data visualizations, business intelligence tools, systems-related items, and reporting.
Acquire knowledge about the people, programs, and priorities of the university's schools and units, and apply this knowledge to the prospect management program.
C. Leadership & Staff Management
Plan, organize, manage, and lead the daily operations of the Prospect Management office.
Recruit, supervise and develop a team of prospect management staff.
Foster a collaborative and results-driven work environment.
Stay well-informed of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Minimum of a bachelor's degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with related experience. For positions with responsibility for direct solicitation of gifts and funds, a minimum of 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience is required. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Prospect management experience, coupled with an understanding of major gift fundraising, meaningful supervisory or team leadership experience, and the ability to leverage business intelligence and analytics capabilities.
In lieu of prospect management experience, the candidate must have fundraising experience at the major gift or principal gift level, along with some prospect management experience.
Ability to communicate well, work collaboratively, manage multiple priorities, and provide strategic insights to enhance fundraising outcomes. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
At least four years of prospect management and/or fundraising experience.
Experience in a complex fundraising organization situated within the higher education or academic medicine sector.
Familiarity with Blackbaud
CRM. |
