  • Terminal degree: PhD, DMA, or Masters in the various areas of Music Industry Studies, which must be completed by July 31, 2025.

The Hayes School of Music seeks someone with experience in or documented potential for the following:

  • Demonstrated expertise in music industry as it relates to the concentrations offered in our degree program.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Evidence of active research, creative, or professional experience in the music industry, digital media, or audio technology.
  • Utilizing industry-standard software and technology (e.g., Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Max, DAWs, immersive audio tools) to ensure hands-on learning experiences.
  • Designing and teaching an Undergraduate course in audio production, sound design, immersive media, and/or electronic music production.
  • Developing and refining courses by integrating music technology with business strategies, emphasizing digital transformation, AI in music, streaming economics, interactive media, and data analytics.
  • Engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations within the institution, such as Sustainable Development, Walker College of Business and its International Programs, Office of International Programs, TI Center for Entrepreneurship, or other programs and colleges, depending on the candidate's areas of expertise.

HAYES SCHOOL OF MUSIC: The Hayes School of Music consists of 423 music students and 54 full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music therapy, music industry studies and music performance with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory/composition and sacred music. Graduate degrees are offered in music therapy and music performance with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory/composition and conducting.

The Bachelor of Science in Music Industry Studies with a minor in General Business prepares students for diverse careers in the $28.6 billion music industry(2023) by fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and emphasizing experiential learning. Students audition on a primary instrument or voice and interview for acceptance into the program of study. The coursework includes music performance and ensembles, academic skills in music, and professional courses focused on the music industry. The program requires a one-semester internship. Combining foundational knowledge in both music and business, the program equips students to advance music-making within a business context. Graduates pursue careers in Recording Arts, Live Sound Production, Music Publishers, Designing & Selling Musical Instruments, Record Label Management, Work with Orchestra/University/non-profit, and Artist Management. The program offers three concentrations: Marketing and Promotion, which prepares students for artist management, concert and venue management, entertainment law, and non-profit work, often attracting aspiring musicians seeking industry insight; Recording and Production, where students learn to capture and engineer music creatively using state-of-the-art studio equipment, preparing for careers in recording studios, live sound engineering, and emerging fields in recorded music; and Manufacturing and Merchandising, ideal for those passionate about musical instruments, leading to careers in retail, instrument design, and manufacturing at both entrepreneurial and corporate levels.
The Erneston Music Library, located in the Broyhill Music Center, supports the curriculum of the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music and the University and contains books, scores, and recordings. In addition, the Special Collections Research Center in Belk Library includes a growing collection of rare book and manuscript materials relating to classical music. Highlights of the collection include the scores of conductor Hans Schwieger, the original manuscripts of composer Tui St. George Tucker, and the Matanya Ophee Collection, one of the largest collections of 19th-century guitar music in the world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • A potential semester course load could include Introduction to Music Industry Studies, Music Marketing, Music Merchandise and Entrepreneurship, Music Management, Professional Development Seminar, and Musician as an Entrepreneur.
  • Partner with industry professionals, record labels, publishers, and entertainment companies to create networking and internship opportunities.
  • Contribute to the Music Industry Studies program's growth and strategic direction and assist with program assessment, accreditation, and curriculum development to maintain industry relevance.
  • Organize guest lectures, workshops, and industry panels to connect students with professionals.
  • In coordination with MIS faculty, advise a portion of the Music Industry Studies students on career pathways, including roles in music management, marketing, publishing, entrepreneurship, audio engineering, live sound, and venue management, as well as coordinate and supervise student internships with industry partners.
  • Participate fully in the responsibilities of faculty membership, including student mentoring, curriculum development and assessment, service activities, meeting attendance, timely communications, advising, and recruitment.
  • Engage in research, creative, or professional activities in the music industry, digital media, or audio technology.


In the Hayes School of Music, full-time tenure-eligible or tenured faculty members are expected to teach 24 full-time equivalent hours (FTEs) per academic year. A faculty member may request up to 6 FTEs annually for extensive scholarly or creative activity.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD Consideration: ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below)
ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
