Summary

Manager, Generation Engineering & Capital Projects

As the Manager of Generation Engineering & Capital Projects, you will lead engineering and project management efforts across mechanical, civil, electrical, instrumentation, and design disciplines for gas & oil power plants and related facilities. You will oversee engineering studies, budgeting, scheduling, and construction activities to enhance plant performance, drive operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. Additionally, you will explore and implement new technologies to improve overall power generation capabilities.

Key Skills & Responsibilities:

Engineering & Project Leadership: Direct professional engineering and project management efforts across multiple disciplines for power plant projects.

Capital Project Oversight: Manage budgeting, scheduling, economic evaluations, and construction activities to ensure efficient project execution.

Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with management, plant production, planning, environmental, and safety teams to align engineering efforts with business goals.

Process & Performance Optimization: Lead engineering studies and analysis to drive efficiency, reliability, and compliance in power plant operations.

Technology Innovation: Research and recommend new technologies to improve plant performance and operational sustainability.

Regulatory & Safety Compliance: Ensure that all engineering and capital project activities adhere to industry regulations, safety protocols, and environmental standards.

  • Have extensive experience in power generation, gas & oil plant operations, or capital project management.
  • Possess strong expertise in mechanical, civil, electrical, and instrumentation engineering for power facilities.

Minimum Requirements

Manager, Generation Engineering & Capital Projects:




  • A four-year bachelor's degree in engineeringor related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA)
  • Eight (8) years of experience in engineering positions.
  • Three (3) years' experience in a supervisory role position involving the planning, organizing, directing and evaluating the work and performance of subordinates.
  • Detailed technical knowledge of power plant engineering, operations, and maintenance.


Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:



  • Working knowledge of environmental requirements, OSHA, information technology and labor regulatory/contract requirements relative to the operation of an electric generation station.
  • Solid leadership, project management and business knowledge, performance, interpersonal/communications skills.
  • Professional Engineer registration.



Approved Engineering degrees:

Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Structural.

(A degree in Engineering Technology is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering).

A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by the Engineering Career Path Review Board to determine equivalency level.

Major Accountabilities

1) Optimizes Plant Operations by directing multi-disciplined engineering services including design, construction, start-up support for both O&M and capital projects.

2) Selects, develops and retains a highly skilled multi-disciplined engineering team through effective coaching, performance feedback, recognition, training and developmental opportunities.

Responsible for staffing, discipline and salary administration for personnel.

3) Oversees department administration, budgeting and contracting functions; integrates with company/plant engineering, accounting, regulatory agencies and corporate relations.

4) Maintains a high awareness and understanding of business improvement opportunities and technology trends.

5) May manage the design of electrical and control systems.

Responds to maintenance and operational problems on a 24-hour basis.

6) May manage the daily operation of Morgan Lake Dam and the plant ash ponds including providing Professional Engineer certification to the New Mexico State Engineer (Four Corners only).

7) May manage the operation of the plant-wide voice and data communication systems including wiring and handsets, programming of telecommunication switches, purchasing of telecommunication hardware, and monitoring of associated costs to ensure reliable plant information services (Four Corners only).

8) May manage large capital expenditures and budgets.

Integrates with plant/company budget targets and goals; ensures reliable communication with company management through effective cost and schedule control.

9) May manage and support the Fleet System Health Program.

Works with plant management staff to continue development of a robust System Health Program.

10) May provide on-site technical consultation on an as needed basis to support the needs of plant operations and outages.

Responds to maintenance and operational problems on a 24-hour basis.

11) May support the development of outage schedules and development of a three-year long-range forecast.

12) May administer the fleet Alarm Management, Battery and Relay Programs.

13) May administer the Fatigue Management Program.

Role Type

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.

*Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).

*Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
