What We Need:
HNI Corporation is committed to sustainability through comprehensive initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and promoting social responsibility. This includesachieving a 64% reduction in combined Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by sourcing 100% renewable electricity for its global operations, working towards zero waste to landfill for all manufacturing facilities by 2030, eliminating non-recyclable foam, and moving to 100% recyclable packaging by 2025, in addition to other projects and initiatives. We are looking for sustainability interns to join our HNI team in Muscatine, Iowa during Summer 2025!
What You Will Do:
HNI's summer internship program is a great opportunity for first-hand experience in environmental sustainability and social responsibility.This is a paid internship, (40 hours per week) that runs from May 28th through August 1st. The hourly pay for this position is approximately $20.00 - $22.00 per hour.
You'll work on one or more projects that create value for our business partners. HNI's large, paid internship program includes exposure to leadership, professional development opportunities (Lunch and Learns, training, skill building workshops), support through a mentor relationship, volunteering, and social events!
Our interns are a key source of future talent for sustainability careers. If you are interested in a career in environmental sustainability, this internship is a great way to get a foot in the door at a company with a stellar reputation for social responsibility.
Internship positions may be in areas such as:
  • PFAS: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) area group of chemicals that are used in many consumer products and industrial processes
  • EPR: Extended producer responsibility (EPR) isa policy that holds companies accountable for the environmental impact of their products throughout their lifecycle.EPR aims to reduce waste, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • EUDR: The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) aims to prevent deforestation and forest degradation by ensuring that certain commodities and products placed on the EU market or exported from it are deforestation-free and legally produced.
  • FSC: FSC, or the Forest Stewardship Council, is a voluntary forestry certification program designed to provide consumers with confidence that the wood or wood-based products they buy originate from sustainably managed forests.
What You Have:
  • Solid skills in Excel since many projects will involve data review and analysis.
  • Solid research skills to familiarize yourself with details of relevant regulations or certification programs.
  • Solid presentation skills to produce PowerPoint presentations that synthesize your analysis and make recommendations to the business.
  • College student with a major in business, environmental science, economics, or public health. Junior-level coursework is preferred.
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
  • Combination of relevant work experience, internships, or related activities (tutor, business fraternity, etc.) preferred

  • Strong technical acumen and desire for a career in sustainability.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Able to develop alternative solutions and work well in individual and group problem solving situations.
  • Self-starter with high personal motivation and desire to take initiative and ownership.
