- A teaching and/or professional record that demonstrates a commitment to working with under-resourced communities.
- Evidence of a high level of creative practice.

Description of the Department or Unit |
The
BFA in Art Education program fosters a spirit of inquiry and exploration, preparing visionary art educators who are radically caring, reflective, knowledgeable, responsive, and highly skilled in the artistry of teaching.
The Department of Art, accredited by
NASAD, comprises over 45 full-time faculty members and serves approximately 776 undergraduate majors across multiple degree programs, including
BFA degrees in Art Education, Graphic Design, Photography, and Studio Art; a BA in Art History, Arts Management, and Studio Art; and a BS in Graphic Communications Management.
The department will reopen Wey Hall, its newly modernized, multi-million-dollar facility, in Fall 2025. In the renovated space, faculty and students have access to an art education model classroom with community touchdown space. Local opportunities for field experiences and/or research collaborations include the Lucy Brock Child Development Lab Program, Appalachian State University Child Development Center, and local/regional schools.
Opportunities for travel and global engagement include the university's New York Loft and study abroad programs in China, Cuba, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Spain. More information about the department, university, and region can be found at

Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The
BFA in Art Education program seeks a colleague with a strong understanding of contemporary issues in art education, including teaching as both practice and inquiry, social justice, disability studies, and assessment. We welcome applicants whose work engages inclusive pedagogies; interdisciplinary and community-based practices; the integration of emerging technologies, global perspectives, ecological sustainability, and/or advocacy in art education. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven ability to contribute to teaching, research, and service in ways that enrich and expand the program's impact.
We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in leadership, curriculum development, arts-based research, and community engagement who can strengthen our program's ongoing efforts to reimagine PK-12 visual art education, art teacher preparation, professional learning, and community-based arts education on both national and international levels.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Teach three undergraduate courses per semester (9 credit hours) in person at the Boone campus, covering all areas of art education. Depending on expertise, additional teaching assignments may include general education or other related areas.
- Assist with curriculum development, program planning, student recruitment, and advising.
- Represent the Art Education program within the Reich College of Education.
- Collaborate with area schools, community organizations, and university faculty.
- Maintain an active research agenda, including presenting and publishing scholarship.
- Provide leadership in the field at regional, national, and/or international levels.
- Engage in ongoing professional development.
- Participate in service activities at the program, department, college, and university levels.

ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |
