The College of Visual, Performing Arts, and Design at Nazareth University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance. This is a tenure-eligible, nine-month appointment anticipated to begin July or August 2025
The ideal candidate will have a terminal degree, with a specialization in Musical Theatre related fields and will have demonstrated significant achievement and distinction in teaching, scholarship/creative work, and service, sufficient to warrant appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. In addition, documented successful administrative experience in the areas of strategic planning, curriculum development and assessment, accreditation, faculty governance, grant writing and/or fundraising, and budget management is required. We invite candidates who have experience in inter-professional collaboration, interactions with diverse communities and cultures, and mentoring faculty.
Primary responsibilities will include leadership and management of the Theatre & Dance Department, recruiting high-quality students locally and nationally, directing productions in the department season, teaching musical theatre performance, history and repertory, student showcases, and audition coaching. In addition, the successful candidate should maintain connections with industry professionals, continue a successful directing and performing career on and off campus, and exhibit a collegial spirit in collaborating with music, dance, and theatre faculty to advance the mission of the University.

The Department Chair supports student learning by overseeing
administration, faculty processes, and program development while advocating for departmental and institutional priorities.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Develop and uphold policies that align with institutional goals.
- Plan and assess curriculum and personnel needs.
- Manage departmental budget and resources.
- Supervise academic advising and faculty meetings.
- Oversee program directors, staff, and student workers.
- Ensure accreditation and support recruitment efforts.
- Maintain community partnerships and oversee library acquisitions.
- Complete required reports and paperwork.
Faculty Recruitment, Support, and Evaluation
- Build a strong department in teaching, scholarship, and service.
- Oversee faculty hiring, assignments, and evaluations.
- Support faculty orientation, mentorship, tenure, and promotion.
- Conduct performance assessment and mediate conflicts.
Program Oversight & Student Support
- Plan course offerings and teaching assignments.
- Evaluate and improve instructional resources.
- Identify and advocate for staffing and program needs.
- Oversee program development and assessment.
- Address student concerns and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations.

A terminal degree, with a specialization in Musical Theatre related fields and experience teaching in a higher education institution. A commitment to teaching in a liberal arts environment is essential. We will consider candidates with a bachelor's degree in musical theatre-related fields with substantial professional experience. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the College mission, of teaching the whole student, by integrating performance skills with a liberal arts grounding. |
