Position Highlights |
The University of Arizona Health Sciences Office of Communications invites applications for the position of Science Communications Consultant. This position fosters effective communication between the University of Arizona Health Sciences and its employees, external stakeholders, alumni, and the public in order to advance the U of A Health Sciences' strategic vision. The Science Communications Consultant establishes a compelling brand for the University of Arizona Health Sciences to ensure its competitive advantage as one of the leading academic medical centers in the Southwest. The Communications Consultant develops, researches, writes, edits and/or publishes written materials and strategic communications about scientific research, including brand publications, articles, proposals, communications plans, speeches, promotional materials and news releases. The position oversees in-bound and outbound digital science communications, and the development, production, and dissemination of science-related marketing and communications collateral to internal and external constituents. The position manages science communication efforts and interactions with various media outlets, especially journals and outlets with an interest in covering scientific research. The incumbent will also provide members of the campus community training in effective science communications. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Designs
strategic marketing and communications plans that fully utilize university and third-party systems and tools in the dissemination of science communications to various internal and external audiences, including students, community members, stakeholders, donors and potential donors, members of the media, alumni, faculty, and others. - Utilizes
in-depth knowledge of science communications processes, policies and regulations to amplify the scientific research being done at the U of A Health Sciences and its 6 colleges, 16 centers and units. - Collects data using analytics and monitoring software and analyzes the
results of all science communications efforts. Provides leadership with comprehensive metrics reports and recommendations for improvement to increase open rates, audience engagement and outreach of scientific communications across platforms. - Serves as a subject matter expert and works closely and collaboratively
with leadership to provide science communication consultation in all materials and assets. Provides guidance on all communications that include scientific research to Health Sciences Office of Communications coworkers and communications colleagues at Health Sciences' 6 colleges, 16 centers and units. - Builds and delivers trainings to improve the quality and consistency of
science communications across Health Sciences and its colleges, centers and units. Transfers knowledge and application of complex principles, theories and concepts to peers across Health Sciences' 6 colleges, 16 centers and units. - Writes, edits and produces a wide array of
science communications to include brand content marketing features, news releases, marketing copy and other content as needed for numerous internal/external audiences. Uses a clear and concise writing style that translates complex scientific topics into compelling content tailored for the audience. - Coordinates, administers, updates and maintains
Health Sciences Office of Communications standard operating procedures and processes related to science communications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of communications job functions and broad industry best practices, techniques and standards.
- Strong ability to synthesize complex scientific data into clear, compelling narratives.
- Familiarity with biomedical terminology, clinical research, and regulatory guidelines.
- Proficiency in
Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat products, and Google products including Analytics, Docs and Spreadsheet.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Graduate-level degree in a science field.
- Experience managing multiple writing projects with competing deadlines.
- Experience in higher education communications, preferably at an academic medical center.
