Job Summary:

The College of Letters & Science Teaching and Learning Administration (TLA) supports departments, programs, and instructional staff in meeting their academic, curricular and instructional responsibilities. Our overarching goal is to help L&S provide world-class learning experiences for students.

We fulfill our responsibilities in close collaboration with the L&S Academic Associate Deans and others in L&S Administration, L&S departments and programs, and a wide variety of external partners (e.g., Offices of the Registrar, Data, Academic Planning and Institutional Research, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, and other Schools and Colleges) to guide the direction, shape decisions, and effectively implement L&S academic, curricular, accreditation, and instructional planning and activities. This holistic approach - from planning through implementation and administration - enables departments to make deliberate plans, informed decisions, and achieve successful outcomes for students.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Planning and Curricular Administration will be an integral part of the TLA team that is responsible for academic planning, curricular administration, and related policies around academic programs and teaching in the College of Letters & Science.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Planning and Curricular Administration responsibilities include, among other things:
1. Development of new academic programs and other endeavors such as centers and managing significant academic program changes;
2. Creation of curricular administration policy, and leading implementation of related campus- and college- curriculum policy and initiatives;
3. Oversee the program review process
4. Management and staffing of the L&S Academic Planning Council and coordination of governance processes related to curriculum and academic planning.


Responsibilities:
Serves as a senior academic officer within a school or college. Plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of an academic program or function within the school or college.

  • 20% Establishes priorities that align with the strategic directives of the assigned school or college and ensures units effectively carry out duties in a way that best supports the academic mission of the university; provides direct supervision of department /program leadership staff and monitors compliance with laws, regulations, university policies, procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
  • 20% Advises and collaborates with the Dean, Associate Dean, and/or Office of the Provost on critical issues, representing the functional area of supervision at appropriate meetings and events as requested; and serves on and/or leads various program and/or university committees as directed
  • 5% Monitors on-going assessment and continuous improvement of academic programs and services by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals is met, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs and services
  • 20% Supports special initiatives and/or grant-funded programs that require senior leadership attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
  • 15% Facilitates collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gathers input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
  • 15% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 5% Serves on various university review committees, working with a wide range of constituencies including the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership


Tasks:

80% Academic Planning, Program Focus



  • Provide strategic leadership and support for existing and new academic programs:

    • Incorporate improvement recommendations into academic programming policy and practice
    • Lead the review process for proposals of new academic programs, program changes, and curriculum;
    • Manage academic program initiatives including designing and deliver directed academic planning and programs messaging to internal and external audiences


  • Program Review: Direct L&S academic program review processes, including review initiation, orientation to review process, record-keeping
  • Lead the professional support of the Letters & Science Academic Planning Council (APC);
  • Participate in and/or lead college-level discussions related to policy gap analysis, research, and development related to curricular issues and policy affecting curriculum.
  • Produce official college / dean's correspondence arising from governance committee action.
  • Lead, coordinate, work on individual or team projects that are at the intersection of academic program, curricular, and teaching, including the L&S Curriculum Committee.
  • Attend and participate in committee meetings as appropriate.


20% Other responsibilities



  • Supervises 1-2 employees
  • Serves on various committees, including review and search committees, advisory and policy committees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required
- Five or more years of relevant and progressively responsible work experience in higher education with direct experience with academic programs, policies and regulations
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and implementing policies in higher education
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to adapt to new conditions, assignments and deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students, able to build consensus and manage conflict

Preferred:
The ideal candidate's qualifications include:
- Able to work independently, with strong skills as a team builder/player and collaborator to manage shared responsibility and consultative supervision
- Demonstrate resilience by exhibiting flexibility and comfort with organization changes
- Knowledgeable about liberal arts educations and current landscape of higher education
- Experience applying state and federal guidelines that inform public university operations and compliance
- Experience with shared governance structures

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $112,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $112,000 - $157,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
