About us:

The Innovation Core at the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences is a cutting-edge microscopy facility located in the located in the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Neurosciences Building on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. As a designated Leica Center of Excellence, we provide access to state-of-the-art commercial microscopy equipment but also support the adoption of pre- commercial microscopes for innovative research programs. The Weill Imaging core supports imaging efforts of many labs at UCSF with modalities including confocal, super-resolution and high throughput imaging.

Job description

We are seeking a motivated and highly skilled individual to join our team at the Innovation Core. As an imaging specialist, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the core's activities and collaborating with researchers to facilitate their imaging needs. This position reports to the Core Manager and the Core Oversight Committee.

Responsibilities



  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of all microscopy instruments to ensure optimal performance.
  • Train and assist core users in the proper operation of microscopes, emphasizing high- quality imaging and instrument longevity.
  • Provide user support and troubleshooting assistance for imaging-related issues.
  • Train and guide users in data collection and image processing/analysis
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain accurate work documentation.
  • Perform core related administrative duties (record maintenance/billing/Health and Safety protocols etc.)
  • Participate in core-provided training courses to enhance skills and knowledge.


Required Qualifications



  • Junior Specialist - A bachelor's degree in biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, or a related field (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.
  • Assistant Specialist -master's degree in biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, or a related field, or a bachelor's degree with three or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialist - master's degree in biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, or a related field, or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Previous experience working in laboratory research at an academic medical center (>6months).
  • Prior experience using light microscopy systems and familiarity with light microscopy concepts/theory.
  • Effective communication skills, good customer service and professional attitude.
  • Ability to multitask and communicate, liaise, and work with staff, students, faculty, and outside vendors.
  • Ability to write clear documentation, perform administrative duties, and research protocol maintenance related to research studies and/or scientific/engineering projects.
  • Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with some open source and/or commercial image analysis software and packages (e.g. FIJI, cellprofiler, OMERO, QPath, Imaris, AIVIA, Arrivis LASX...)
  • Experience in image analysis and/or bioinformatics and proficiency in coding (preferably Python)
  • Experience with Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and In situ hybridization (ISH)
  • Experience with advanced imaging modalities including super-resolution, label free imaging, lightsheet etc.
