A Brief Overview

UH Office of Strategy & Innovation (iStrategy)-home of UH Ventures (UHV) and programs such as the Veale Initiative for Healthcare Innovation and Feuer Innovation Accelerator-is the strategy and innovation arm of University Hospitals (UHHS). iStrategy develops sets the enterprise strategy and builds innovative new business models, products, solutions, and companies that leverage existing UH capabilities to benefit patients/consumers and caregivers. iStrategy leverages the combination of UH Ventures' design and process discipline with the planning platform to amplify and accelerate University Hospitals' position as the leading provider of health care in Northeast Ohio. We are seeking a talented and curious Human-Centered Designer with strong early-stage innovation experience to join our healthcare transformation team at a large hospital system. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in discovering, developing, and implementing innovative healthcare solutions that prioritize the needs of patients and healthcare professionals. Your expertise in foundational and generative research will be crucial in defining problems and running experiments to shape the future of healthcare delivery.

What You Will Do



  • Foundational and Generative Research
    * Plan, conduct, and synthesize comprehensive user research to understand the needs, behaviors, and pain points of patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders
    * Select and employ a variety of research methods, such as interviews, surveys, and ethnographic studies to gather insights and define the problem.
  • Design Strategy:
    * Identify frameworks best suited to healthcare delivery needs for patient facing and healthcare processes (e.g., customer journeys, service blueprints, ecosystem maps).
    * Work in collaboration with the Director of Design Operations and other stakeholders to develop design strategies that align with the hospital system's innovation goals and transformative ideas for experimentation.
  • Human-Centered Design:
    * Apply human-centered design principles to create innovative and intuitive healthcare solutions.
    * Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, engineers, and clinicians, to translate user insights into actionable design recommendations and strategies.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    * Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams of clinicians, designers, engineers, and stakeholders, to ensure seamless integration of user-centered design principles.
    * Clearly communicate research findings, design recommendations, and design rationale to team members and stakeholders.
    * Advocate for user-centered design practices and ensure the voice of the end-users is integrated throughout the design process.
  • Workshop Design, Preparation, and Facilitation
    * Develop and deliver engaging, inclusive, and accessible ideation workshops in collaboration with stakeholders that align with organizational goals.
    * Facilitate interactive sessions, foster a safe and engaging environment, and adapt delivery based on participant needs and feedback.
  • Industry Research and Trends:
    * Stay updated on the latest trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in human-centered design and healthcare.
    * Share knowledge and insights with the team, contributing to the continuous improvement of design processes and methodologies.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
