Your Role:

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Poultry Research & Development Manager to oversee the R&D programs of our company-owned farms. The ideal candidate will have experience in both animal agriculture and research settings, as well as comfortable in a face-to-face teaching setting. This role requires strong organizational skills, and a passion for sustainable agriculture.

What You'll Do:



  • Create a framework for vetting project ideas so the ideas with the most potential and feasibility can be pursued.
  • Design research trials that will benefit all stakeholders by identifying objectives, methods, and variables.
  • Coordinate project setup and data collection for all research trials.
  • Aggregate and interpret all data points from research projects.
  • Analyze data obtained from all research projects using statistical and other analytical methods to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Use research data to create internally published documentation in the form of articles, reports, and reviews to share research findings.
  • Synthesize data and curate easy-to-understand documents to inform the grower network of the benefits and risks of adopting the methods or protocols outlined within the research projects, including capital costs to the grower of adopting such methods.
  • Present accelerator farms research in all the necessary forums.
  • Provide training to farm staff to successfully perform their role in any research trial including their role in setup and data collection.
  • Collaborate with the compliance program manager to adopt any positive research findings into the accelerator farm operating program and provide farm staff with appropriate training on all changes to the farm program.
  • Continue to raise the standards within the Animal Welfare space
  • Regularly report any research findings to all appropriate stakeholders.
  • Plan and execute (by presenting or bringing in allied partners) seminars and hands-on learning opportunities for Vital Farms Growers and Farm Associates.
  • Create continuing education opportunities for accelerator farm associates and Vital Farms team members.
  • Create and maintain a database of resources developed from research around bird and farm management available to Vital Farms growers and accelerator farm associates.


What You Bring to the Table:



  • Bachelors degree required, Masters preferred, in an animal science related field
  • 5+ years of poultry industry or animal science industry experience required.
  • 3+ years of Agriculture Research and Development, preferably Poultry
  • Pasture raised poultry experience preferred
  • Located within commutable distance to all locations that barns are located or willingness to relocate, Southern Indiana or Kentucky region
  • Comfortable working in a barn environment.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% for farm visits and company events.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays if needed to support the farms.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Effective communication skills and creative problem-solving ability
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

At Vital Farms, compensation decisions are dependent upon a variety of factors, which may include, but are not limited to, skill level, experience, education, training, market demands, and business needs. A reasonable estimate of the current starting annual base salary for this position is $115,000 - $130,000. Please keep in mind that hiring at the maximum end of the range would not be typical in order to allow for potential continued future salary growth.
