Real estate company isseeking an experienced Controller to lead their accounting team and oversee financial operations within a dynamic property management environment. This role is pivotal in maintaining financial accuracy, implementing standardized processes, and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, problem-solving capabilities, and a hands-on approach to improving financial operations.
This position reports directly to the President, with a dotted-line reporting structure to the CFO and Director of Accounting. The Controller will manage eight direct reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Oversight & Reporting
  • Manage financial reporting processes for multiple P&Ls, including corporate and fractional ownership structures.
  • Oversee cash accounts, bank reconciliations, and ensure financial records are accurate.
  • Ensure compliance with CRA and HUD reporting requirements.
  • Standardize and improve accounting procedures following previous inconsistencies.
  • Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead and mentor a team of eightdirect reports, fostering collaboration and professional development.
  • Guide long-tenured staff through process improvements, balancing change management with respect for institutional knowledge.
  • Work closely with executive leadership to align financial strategies with business goals.
  • Process Improvement & System Implementation
  • Drive the transition from AppFolio to Yardi, ensuring a smooth and efficient implementation.
  • Develop and implement standardized accounting procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to refine financial operations and reporting structures.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Proven experience as a Controller, preferably within a property management or real estate environment.
  • Strong background in financial reporting and multi-entity accounting.
  • Experience managing 5+ direct reports, with a focus on team development and leadership.
  • Hands-on expertise in bank reconciliations, cash management, and P&L oversight.
  • Familiarity with CRA and HUD reporting is highly desirable.
  • Yardi experience is a strong plus; prior experience leading system conversions is beneficial.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a process-driven approach to problem-solving.

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;
  • office location and other geographic considerations;
  • other business and organizational needs.

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
