Summary:

Reports to the Director of Surgical Services. Under the direction of the Director of Surgical Services and the Spine Center Directors the Manager assists in the planning direction and operation of the clinical aspects of the Spine Program. Manages the ongoing analysis development and implementation of methods and systems to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the program clinical functions. Oversees the day-to-day management of the Spine Center and serves as the liaison to coordinated care throughout the hospital. Oversees and coordinates education programs for staff physicians and patients as well as community outreach programs.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops and maintains Spine Program; monitors and evaluates the standards of patient care.

Interviews applicants and recommends hiring conditions for new employees. Coordinates with Human Resources.

Develops employees to their fullest work potential by identifying education opportunities and unit-based growth experiences. Develops employees by monitoring intervening and interacting when appropriate after assessing and evaluating the nursing care provided.

Works collaboratively with staff peers and Professional Practice Development staff including Clinical Nurse Specialist and Clinical Nurse Leaders to continually update existing standards of care and ensure educational needs are met. Participates in the orientation of new staff by consulting Staff Development Professionals monitoring and evaluating the performance of new employees.

Evaluates the individual performance of each member of the staff and provides developmental feedback; assessments are on-going and reviewed annually. Meets with employees to discuss and evaluate performance and review individual performance goals at appropriate interval periods. Follows appropriate hospital performance counseling process for disciplinary issues.

Conducts regular monthly staff meetings for all direct reports; organizes and leads quarterly multidisciplinary team meetings.

Ensures compliance with all applicable quality regulatory payor and accreditation standards for the Spine Center program.

Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives.

Manages ongoing quality assurance activities by collecting measuring and analyzing statistical data; Reports on operational and clinical outcomes of the Spine Program.

Manges the program*s Quality Improvement activities commensurate with the Hospital*s Quality Improvement plan.

Coordinates program participation with the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) Physician Assistants in Orthopedic Surgery (PAOS) American Society of Orthopedic Physician Assistants (ASOPA) and/ or National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) including the establishment and maintenance of Center of Excellence (COE) status.

Serves as subject matter expert and functions as a resource to the program.

Acts as liaison between hospital surgical program non-surgical program and other aspects of the multidisciplinary Spine Center surgery program.

Participates in developing policies procedures and standards of patient care in conjunction with program Medical Director(s).

Participates in developing and maintaining specific patient care plans clinical pathways and protocols.

Ensures patient education; oversees the patient pre-operative education class.

Leads and manages implementation of community outreach/events and awareness efforts. Develops and oversees physician patient and employee outreach programs including continuing education activities for health professionals and communicates the Spine Center program marketing needs to hospital administration.

Ensures the development and distribution of a quarterly Spine Center Newsletter.

Participates on hospital committees; including participation in regularly scheduled off-site education and or promotional events.

Assists and collaborates in Spine Center research activities. Submits and publishes in local regional and national journals and conferences.

Other information:

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

BSN or degree in Physical Therapy. Master*s degree in Nursing Business or Healthcare Administration preferred but not required.

Must have current license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Physical Therapist in the State of Rhode Island

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification American Heart Association

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

For nurses Orthopedic Certification preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Three or more years of progressively responsible clinical experience and demonstrated basic management skills in an inpatient orthopedic setting.

Experience with patient education and program improvement/development.

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Superior interpersonal problem solving organization and leadership skills.

Ability to identify needs of staff patients and Spine Center to develop and implement in-house (professional development) and community education outreach programs workshops seminars support services.

Ability to communicate effectively (public speaking skills) with diverse audiences including professional staff patients community media and other service agencies.

Interpersonal skills to allay anxiety elicit cooperation and provide education for patients/families and to effectively function as a member of the healthcare team to coordinate and discuss patient care activities.

Advanced skill in an assessment of physical and psychosocial health-illness status of individuals. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians advanced practice providers and hospital staff to coordinate patient care.

Capable of working well across functions and groups and to build effective teams.

The ability to deliver business results and solutions keep the focus on driving patient value and assume personal ownership and accountability.

Possess creativity be adaptable to change as needed and experiment and learn from others.

Computer skills including Microsoft Word Excel PowerPoint etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Normal patient care environment with exposure to infectious diseases. Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions. May work off-site at educational/promotional events.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within department policies and practices. Takes initiative and meets objectives with minimal supervision. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are required.
