Internship Summary:

Reports To: Domestic Media Relations Manager

The Domestic Media Relations Intern will directly support the Domestic Media Relations Manager's work to pitch and host domestic journalists and generate positive editorial coverage of Washington, DC. The intern will gain dedicated experience in media relations, project management, journalist pitching, itinerary building, and media hosting.

This exciting role offers the opportunity to contribute to the promotion of Washington, DC as a premier leisure travel destination. As a Domestic Media Relations Intern, you will support the team in developing and executing strategic media relations initiatives. Your responsibilities will include:



  • Media Pitching: Preparing and pitching timely media content to relevant journalists.
  • Itinerary Planning: Building media itineraries based on targeted pitches and angles.
  • Project Management: Coordinating itineraries and bookings between DDC and member stakeholders.
  • Media List Maintenance: Creating and updating media lists using Excel.
  • Content Creation: Drafting content for the quarterly journalist newsletter.
  • Media Research: Researching editorial calendars for long-lead pitching and tracking media coverage.
  • Reporting: Assisting with quarterly media in-kind reports and quantifying media coverage.
  • Team Collaboration: Attending company-wide and team meetings to stay informed and contribute to discussions.

Your Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):



  • Prepare media pitches with timely content including current events, holidays, F&B trends, museum exhibitions, etc.
  • Build media itineraries based on targeted pitches and angles
  • Project manage itinerary coordination and booking between DDC and member stakeholders
  • Create and update media lists using Excel
  • Draft content for quarterly journalist newsletter
  • Research editorial calendars for long-lead pitching
  • Assist in the management of international firm representation
  • Assist with quarterly media in-kind reports
  • Assist with tracking and quantifying media coverage
  • Attend weekly company-wide and team meetings as well as monthly departmental meetings
  • Administrative tasks including press kit preparation and media gift deliveries
  • Audit internal press materials
  • Research as needed


What You Bring: Experience, Competencies, Education:



  • Currently enrolled in college; completed at least sophomore, in good academic standing.
  • Hospitality, Public Relations, Communications or relevant coursework majors strongly preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated interest in the travel and tourism economy, enthusiasm for Washington, DC
  • Eagerness to learn from a team of dynamic, engaged professionals working to promote Washington, DC and its vital hospitality and travel and tourism economy


Internship Specifics:

Duration



  • Summer ( start week of June 11 - ending week of August 11).
  • You must be available for work minimum 30 hours per week.
  • Hours worked must be within the parameters of Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm EST to coincide with the operational hours of the office.


Work Environment:

This Intern will follow Destination DC's policies for staff and may work hybrid, coming into the office at a minimum of three days a week and as determined by supervisor. Intern may work from the office on other days, too. Intern must have reliable internet to work remotely.
