Position Summary
The Vice Dean for Education Affairs is responsible for oversight of physician education throughout the College of Medicine (COM). Physician education programs include the MD degree program, graduate medical education("GME"), continuing medical education ("CME"), and college-sponsored supplemental pre-medical and joint degree programs. The vice dean will collaborate with those within the College who lead graduate degree programs and will represent the College in communications with the University's Office of Academic Programs and the Graduate College. The vice dean leads the Office of Educational Affairs, a unit within the dean's administration. They will assist the dean in strategic planning, communications with the university, relationships with affiliated hospitals and healthcare providers related to fellowship and residency training and supervision, and institutional advancement initiatives to ensure the continued growth and development of the College's educational programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directs the Office of Educational Affairs, College of Medicine, with the assistance of the director, administrative operations.
  • Serves as the primary liaison on academic issues with the UIC Provost's Office and with other colleges of the university.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of affiliation agreements with other institutional entities.
  • Is responsible for ensuring the appropriateness of all education-related policies of the College and managing the process of policy revision and approval.
  • Serves as the student Grievance Officer for the College of Medicine.
  • Provides vision and oversight for the MD program in Chicago, as well as the Peoria and Rockford regional campuses.
  • Chairs the Accreditation Monitoring and Quality Improvement Committee and is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education's accreditation requirements.
  • Provides vision for and facilitates collaboration among the campuses as institutional sponsors of graduate medical education.
  • Oversees and supports the graduate medical education programs sponsored by the Chicago Campus and UI Hospital, with direct responsibility, through supervision of the associate and assistant deans for GME, for the academic training environment and for ensuring compliance with Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education requirements. Serves ex-officio on the Chicago campus Graduate Medical Education Committee.
  • Supervises the Office of Continuing Professional Development and its director and ensures compliance with Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education requirements. Serves ex-officio on the College Committee on Continuing Medical Education.
  • Provides vision and direction for the college's supplemental academic programs (scholarly concentration programs, joint degree programs, GPPA Medical Scholars Program, pre-matriculation programs, and student research) through supervision of the director, supplemental academic programs.
  • Fosters active collaboration with the Department of Medical Education on behalf of medical educators throughout the college.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • MD, PhD or equivalent terminal degree in an appropriate field.
    • In addition, PhD or EdD in education is considered a plus.
    • At least five years of experience in educational leadership positions within a medical school environment.
    • At least 7 years' experience in curriculum development, student assessment, and program evaluation.
    • Excellent communication, presentation, organizational and computer skills are required, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and other related software and familiarity with higher-level data analytic and data visualization platforms.
