The Role

The Research and Innovation (R&I) department requires a professional with experience in Research and Development or New Product Development to deliver on the product development roadmap growing Avanos' enteral feeding business particularly in the development of our silicone balloon line. This candidate must act as a technical leader to the company and recognized both internally and externally as an expert in the field of material science silicones and elastomers. Possess strong technical leadership skills to a large team or program (5+ people). Seeking someone who acts as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications with a focus on silicone materials. Serves as a consultant to top management in long-range company planning concerning new technology platforms, has significantly contributed to the successful launch of at least 1 high quality new product since their last promotion (where applicable), and seen both internally and externally as a true entrepreneur and innovator in the field.

Responsibilities



  • Recognized externally as a key subject matter expert in silicone products (i.e. medical device balloons) and opinion may be sought out by others outside the company.
  • Demonstrated career of innovation and technical acumen by being primary inventor on multiple issued patents, having authored or significantly collaborated/guided several publications, and/or having launched several new products.
  • Viewed by advanced peers as credible role model for technical innovation and problem solving.
  • Develops solutions to technical and business problems where no clear precedence exists.
  • Organizes, sequences and analyzes extremely complex interdependent problems. Creates new models or theories that explain a complex situation or problem and reconcile discrepant data.
  • Coordinates activities of cross functional team members to execute program objectives.
  • When conflicts arise, reaches out to management with alternate plans and options.
  • Understands the impact and long-term implications of decisions when resolving complex problems within team and with external sources.
  • Develops solutions to complex technical and business problems where no clear precedence exists.
  • Develops implementation plan and effective project schedules for technical portion of major platform enhancement cross-functional project or major derivative projects with the aid of cross functional team and project management office.
  • Identifies when teamwork is the best method to solve problems and gains cooperation and commitment from top management and key external partners through influence, not authority.
  • Leads R&D function in developing cross-functionally integrated project plans / strategies and active contributor to the development of new project/program opportunities ("bullpen" items).
  • Partners with strategic marketing in identifying/mapping new strategic initiatives/adjacencies.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with relevant KOLs and SMEs to stay abreast of new advancements in clinical and technical areas of interest.
  • Acts as a primary spokesperson and an active participant in different external committees, bureaus, advisory boards, trade shows, and/or customer meetings. In this role, the individual would represent Avanos company goals and objectives and influence decision making.
  • Willing to travel up to 15% at times.



Your Qualifications

Required



  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Material Science with 20+ years of experience,
  • Or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Material Science with 15+ years of experience,
  • Or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Material Science with 12+ years of experience with a focus on silicone.
  • Must have experience in manufacturing process of silicone tubes or balloons.



Preferred



  • Medical device experience with a specific area of focus on silicone balloons
  • Has significantly contributed to the successful launch of at least 1 high quality new product since their last promotion
