Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,400 to $115,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $85,400 to $156,800/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Information Systems Administrator is responsible for strategic planning, security, operation, and acquisition of information technology as it supports the research, education and administrative functions of the Department of Mathematics. Under the general direction of the Business Officer and the computing committee, the System Administrator is responsible for maintaining a complex departmental computing infrastructure. Responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems, services, and user applications for Windows, Linux and Mac OS environments. Responsible for administration of network services, departmental back up systems, financial back up systems (GUS), a variety of computational applications, productivity tools running on departmental servers, faculty and visitor workstations. Directly responsible for the implementation and reliability of the department technical environment, based upon goals and available resources.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • At least 1-5 years of experience in systems administration, IT project management, or related roles.
  • Strong knowledge of system administration, including installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers and desktop systems.
  • Understanding of security best practices, including intrusion detection, vulnerability management, and incident response.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in managing Linux, Unix, Windows, and macOS environments.
  • Experience with networking protocols and services (DNS, DHCP, NFS, VPN, firewalls).
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell).
  • Experience with system backups, disaster recovery planning, and data integrity solutions.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, virtualization, or containerization technologies is a plus (AWS, VMware, Docker, etc.).
  • Familiarity with scientific computing applications like MATLAB, Mathematica, Maple, TeX, LaTeX.
  • Experience in an academic or research environment, particularly in supporting faculty and students.
  • Knowledge of IT governance and compliance policies in a university setting.
  • Familiarity with IT service management frameworks (e.g., ITIL).
  • Experience supervising student staff or IT support teams.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty, students, and campus IT staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Experience in vendor selection, contract negotiations, and system integration.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

40% Business Process and Systems Analysis and Design -

  • Under the general direction of the Business Officer and the computing committee; maintains highly complex departmental computing infrastructure. Identifies, prioritizes and implements large scope solutions associated with maintaining the performance and reliability of servers. Also gives technical advice to the Department of Mathematics computing committee and coordinates with LSIT and other campus resources. Supervises 2 student staff for design and building websites, computer Math Lab support and general desktop support. Designs and coordinates the entire Math departmental computing environment based upon departmental goals and available resources. This includes support for non-Unix desktop computers and access to general productivity tools; Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating system installation, configuration, and patching; configuring and managing wired and wireless network applications and services such as DNS, DHCP, NFS, mail, web, printing and file services; designing and implementing a security strategy including intrusion detection and incident response; designing and implementing a backup strategy to ensure data integrity of servers and desktop workstations; and designing and implementing a computing environment supporting faculty and student access to tools and data in support of instruction and research. Analyzes and studies the information related to the needs of the department to determine how people, business processes and computer and information technologies can be best arranged to accomplish the objectives of the organization. Consults with users to observe and analyze work processes, reviews current systems usage and available documentation. Assists users to clearly identify and understand their processes, roles, relationships and dependencies. Defines, designs and implements system management solutions. Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the system. Manages centralized computer servers and services with a campus-wide scope. Performs complex analysis to acquire, install, configure, secure, and support operating systems, databases, utilities and internet/intranet-related tools. Performs complex systems programming and systems support activities. Conducts programming tasks. Plans, designs and implements network systems. Performs complex security control activities to prevent hackers from infiltrating department information.

30% Project Management and Implementation of Systems -

  • Collaborates closely with internal and external entities: Computing committee, Chair, Vice Chairs, Business Officer, LSIT and ETS, to determine the best approach for achieving particular business requirements and to establish project goals and priorities. Initiates and coordinates projects throughout their life cycle, from definition to implementation, including fit/gap analysis, procurement, project scheduling, environment and system setup, data migrations, testing, and implementation phases of the project. Collaborates with the Business Officer in vendor evaluation, selection, and implementation. Serves as the primary contact person with information system vendors for the integration of a variety of functionalities. Develops and assists in executing test plans for new systems and applications, including developing test data sets.

20% Server and Software Maintenance -

  • Responsible for maintaining the department servers at optimum level to fully support the complex scientific computing and other research activities of the faculty and graduate students. This includes installing, configuring, enhancing and supporting the Linux, Unix, Windows and Mac based computational applications and productivity tools on Math departmental servers and maintaining the performance and reliability of the Linux, Unix Windows and Mac desktop workstations; compilers, open-source software, MATLAB, Mathematica, Maple, TeX , LaTeX and other various utilities. Encompasses "emergency" coding. Assistance in simple debugging tasks and optimization of systems, high-level instruction in tool usage and long-term data management.

5% Campus IT Liaison -

  • Works with LSIT, ETS and NHDC to further the department's goals as well as works closely with the Campus Office of Software Licensing on license updates. Works directly with and educates/trains department members and visiting members; invited speakers, researchers, and graduate students to make their devices operable; Bring Your Own Device. Assists new users with System integration.

5% User Training and Misc. -

  • Works directly with and educates/trains department members and visiting members; invited speakers, researchers, and graduate students to make their devices operable; Bring Your Own Device. Assists new users with System integration.
