Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, rated a Best National University by US News, seeks an Open Rank - Clinician Educator to join a welcoming academic environment. This opportunity provides up to 20% of time protected for research, teaching, and administrative work, with additional time possible based on your interests. Led by a respected leader focused on supporting faculty for career growth, you'll have the opportunity to develop sub-sub-specialty interests, work in a new 9-floor ICU/ED/OR tower opening September 2025, earn additional "moonlighting" income, and obtain J1 visa sponsorship.

  • Join a supportive academic setting with a fun-loving group led by a director whose mission, after ensuring excellent patient care, is to maximize opportunities for every member of the Division.
  • Start with up to 20% of time protected for teaching, research, and administrative work. Additional protected time is available.
  • Develop on-the-job expertise in preventive CV health, advanced lipid therapy, hypertension, cardiomyopathies, imaging, and other niches, or earn an executive MBA.
  • Supplement income by "moonlighting" at our nearby affiliated community hospital or get an appointment at the Albuquerque VA.
  • Work with our 13 terrific cardiology fellows before they graduate and go on to sub-specialty fellowships at premiere national institutions.
  • Renew your idealism and faith in medicine by teaching medical students and mentoring internal medicine residents.
  • Challenge yourself with administrative roles: Cardiology Division members in recent years have served as Deputy Secretary of Health for the State of New Mexico, Director of Telehealth for University Hospital, Executive Director of the University Medical Group, American College of Cardiology New Mexico chapter Governor, President of SCAI, and Executive Vice Chair of Internal Medicine.

New Mexico is ranked 7th best state to practice in, due to "low physician burn-out rate", 6th lowest cost of living, and climate allowing year-round recreation, by Medscape's "Best and Worst Places to Practice in 2024" survey. Albuquerque was ranked a Best Place to Live in and a Best Place to Retire by US News. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Board certified/board eligible in Cardiovascular Disease by date of hire
  • Board certification/board eligible in Echocardiography by date of hire
  • Eligible to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skills in providing inpatient and outpatient care
  • Experience with a broad spectrum of cardiovascular disease
  • Teaching experience at all levels of training
  • Training or experience in research
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well
    as working with diverse communities of patients, staff, and providers
