Covia is looking for a Process Engineer who will have a positive impact on the Operations team at our Fort Smith, AR facility. The Process Engineer will be responsible for mineral processing analysis, design, and engineering at the plant level. Performing activities designed to safely drive improvements to process productivity, process efficiency and quality. The process engineer will also support an operating environment that embraces the continuous improvement process, implementing and maintaining systems, driving productivity improvements as well as leading, coaching, motivating, and engaging the work teams to accomplish operational objectives.

The successful candidate will have the following Key Accountabilities:



  • Ensure EHS compliance and adherence to internal standards for safe and sustainable operations
  • Make observations of the plant processes to identify its areas of opportunity
  • Leading cost and process improvement projects.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators for plant processes to drive improvements to process productivity and efficiency
  • Recommend improvements to those areas of opportunity found to increase productivity and efficiency of the process, reduce costs, or improve product quality
  • Advise by providing technical information of the process and material flow to various Corporate Departments for the preparation of capital projects
  • Review civil, mechanical, and electrical plans to verify their compliance with the requirements of site-specific projects
  • Review the design of the process control systems to be implemented in order to assure that it is adequate for the stability of the site processes
  • Recommend improvements to process control systems to improve data collection and measurements to increase productivity and efficiency of the processes
  • Monitor the plant's quality data for possible trends or shifts and establish appropriate actions to conform to the plant's Continuous Monitoring/Control System and Process Control Plan requirements
  • Train operators in the new processes and equipment implemented to operate them according to the requirements of the new process
  • Prepare and modify process instruction sheets as needed
  • Assist with startup activities for new equipment or processes
  • Coordinate process audit plans and its scope with Corporate Process Engineering. Participate in process sampling and analyzing data with guidance from Process Engineering


  • Work with the site to support Covia's Operations Management System with objectives that include:

    • Improving work effectiveness and efficiencies
    • Providing the tools and approaches needed by teams to deliver
    • Assisting to identify systems to support debottlenecking and loss prevention




  • Assisting the plant in developing and supporting a portfolio of Continuous Improvement (CI) projects for areas of productivity, energy, and growth


  • Provide lean manufacturing training to front line and supervisory staff at the plant


  • Build and foster a strong culture of personal and process safety across the organization
  • Collaborate with cross functional and interdependent departments as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned


The successful candidate will have the following Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Science from an accredited college or university, required


  • Minimum 2-5 years of professional experience in either Lean Manufacturing, and/or mining/heavy industry experience focused on Production, Maintenance and Energy initiatives
  • Experience with Kiln's and/or Ball Mills preferred
  • Ability to communicate with technical specialists and to interpret technical drawings and specification documents
  • Ability to work well with others required including process operations, technical specialists, site operators, contractors, supply chain and other functions
  • Demonstrated ability to perform essential functions of position required


  • Ability to train plant employees in problem solving techniques to deliver results.
  • Self-motivated to resolve challenges and circumvent obstacles


  • Strong analytical and technical skills, ability to solve complex problems, ability to innovate, and a strategic business perspective and financial acumen
  • A passion for innovative concepts that can transform the business
