Position Description:

As a Curator I, you will independently conducts data curation including data acquisition and analysis for the Rat Genome Database project which is charged with the collection, analysis, integration, and dissemination of data from multiple rat research centers around the world. Extracts relevant information from published journal articles, research laboratories, and databases and integrates this information with the existing data.
Responsibilities
- Performs data acquisition and analysis, including identifying relevant sources of information, extracting clinical, disease, physiological and genetic information text sources such as published literature and clinical records as well as web-based and other sources.
- Develops content for web-based research resources.
- Assists in creating data standards through the development and implementation of vocabularies and ontologies.
- Works with programmers and other curators to develop new and existing data analysis tools, database design, and web interfaces.
- Assists in creating workshops, presentations, and educational materials.
Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of biological sciences and excellent oral and written communication skills in English; strong critical thinking, independent problem solving and attentiveness to detail are required.
- Exhibit competence with MS
- Office software, familiarity with the use of public sequence, model organism or disease databases, as well as familiarity with controlled vocabularies, ontologies and data standards.
- Understanding of databases and manipulation of data.
- Enthusiastic, highly motivated, and have strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Be part of a group working on the development and use of genomic, genetic and phenotype data applications, processes and pipelines and so should be able to work well in a team environment with other with diverse scientific backgrounds
Preferred Schedule:
Part-Time: not to exceed 20 hrs/wk - flexible hours
Position Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum education: Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, physiology, biological or health sciences
Minimum experience: Experience in use of public genomic or disease data resources and software tools, data acquisition, integration or standardization; clinical, laboratory or informatics experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred education: Degree or certificate in proofreading, copyediting, and/or scientific writing
Preferred experience: Experience as a biocuration professional. Expertise working with and developing ontologies/controlled vocabularies. Experience processing data from multiple species. Experience working with large datasets such as data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS).
