About the Department |
The Office of Research and Engagement within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences provides pre-award and post-award services to faculty within our college. We assist faculty in seeking funding opportunities and developing proposals and budgets while ensuring compliance with university, state, federal, and agency guidelines. When sponsored projects are funded, we provide post-award support to ensure compliance with the university, state, and federal regulations and agency terms and conditions. The office also manages internal funding opportunities and extension and engagement initiatives within the college. |
Essential Job Duties |
The primary purpose of this position is to assist faculty with locating research funding opportunities and developing proposals for submission to state and federal agencies, foundations, other agencies and organizations for sponsored project funding. As the pre-award specialist you will be the main point of contact for faculty and will work directly with them to prepare proposals, budgets, and budget justifications. In this role, you will help ensure compliance with the Request for Proposal (
RFP) guidelines; college, university, and state policies and procedures; Cost Accounting Standards; and policies set forth in
OMB Uniform Guidance (UG). It is important that you actively stay informed about updates and changes relevant within research administration.
Key responsibilities are:
- ability to process many proposals simultaneously and in a deadline driven environment
- willingness to reference, research, and apply knowledge relevant to the pre-award process.
- monitor and facilitate the proposal routing process in order to ensure all information is collected correctly
- effectively communicate with faculty about the pre-award process
- provide one-on-one training to faculty about pre-award processes, electronic research administration systems, and policies.be well-versed in electronic research administration systems like Research.gov, Grants.gov, and eRA Commons and be able to learn other agency specific web-based portals quickly
- support related to narrative formulation and editing / writing for non-technical sections
- help develop resource templates (e.g. Facilities template)
- assist faculty with submission of Data Use Agreements
- assist with training workshops
Additionally, you will manage internal research funding programs offered by the Office of Research and Engagement. Tasks will include drafting funding application guidelines and instructions, collecting and reviewing applications, assisting the Associate Dean for Research and Engagement with the review process, and tracking and documenting the applications by fiscal year. |
Other Responsibilities |
As part of this role, there will be occasional opportunities to take on new responsibilities, attend departmental, college, and/or university meetings and trainings. These opportunities allow you to expand your skill set, explore different areas of the department, and gain valuable experience in the organization's operations. |
Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Considerable knowledge of the field of research administration
- Ability to work independently in establishing, applying, and interpreting policies and procedures.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team office environment and independently as needed.
- Ability to make sound, confident decisions based on the given facts of a particular situation.
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Google Suite, and Zoom
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Strong budgeting and math skills

Preferred Qualifications |
- Graduation from a four-year college or university and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong writing skills
