Essential Job Duties
Join a dynamic team dedicated to ensuring the reliable and safe operation of NC State University's extensive power distribution system. As the Electric Operations Supervisor, you will oversee the operation and maintenance of critical power infrastructure, including a self-healing grid, multiple high-voltage substations, protective relays, breakers, and a SCADA system with over 10,000 data points. This role is key to maintaining uninterrupted power for the university community. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and direct a team of nine technicians, ensuring efficient delegation of tasks and high-quality execution

  • Oversee power distribution infrastructure, prioritizing the safety of personnel and the campus community
  • Utilize SCADA controls and other advanced systems to monitor and maintain high-voltage distribution networks
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of substations, protective relays, breakers, and associated power distribution components

  • Establish and implement processes to optimize system performance, safety, and compliance.
  • Work with internal teams and external partners to enhance efficiency and ensure seamless power delivery
  • Utilize AiM (work order system) to efficiently track, update, and resolve maintenance requests

  • Support infrastructure improvements and system upgrades to meet the university's evolving energy needs

Other Responsibilities

  • Lead safety efforts for the Power Systems Shop by setting expectations, providing resources, and ensuring compliance.
  • Assess risks, develop safety procedures, and identify hazards to protect technicians and the public.
  • Ensure proper safety gear, provide specialized training, and apply Arc-Flash calculations to field situations and mitigate risks of electric shock, falls, burns, and other injuries.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalency and four years of experience in high voltage distribution operations, of which one year is supervisory; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge and the ability to apply university, State, Federal and OSHA power distribution regulations
  • The ability to prioritize safety and meet operational needs
  • The ability to budget, manage personnel and proactively address organizational concerns
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a university or commercial setting
Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid CDL required
  • Valid North Carolina CDL must be in place and active at date of hire and must be maintained
  • This position having a requirement for a CDL license is subject to periodic drug tests
