Position Description:

Purpose
Work independently under the direction of the Staff Veterinarian by directing daily veterinary services program, surgical facility management operations and/or animal health and welfare activities. Provide direction and guidance to animal health technicians to ensure successful achievement of the BRC's mission in alignment with the BRCs vision and values and in a manner consistent with established policies and regulations.
Primary Functions
* Direct and perform daily veterinary services program activities, surgical facility support operations, and animal health and welfare activities to ensure performance is consistent with established policies and procedures (SOP's).
* Responsible for supervision of the veterinary services staff including recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and development and performance evaluation. Mentor and direct staff to achieve division goals.
* Cooperate, coordinate and communicate with internal and external entities by using appropriate methods to comply with policies and regulations and ensure efficient facility operations. Act as a resource for investigators and support staff and comply with all aspects of the animal care and use program.
* Oversee surgical suite and other designated veterinary services program locations. Coordinate facility maintenance activities to minimize disruption of research activities. Monitor environmental conditions and resolve in collaboration with facilities and external contractors.
* Direct the scheduling of veterinary services, monitoring of the surgical suite environment, inventories, and surgical related waste disposal.
* Train animal health technicians to perform animal husbandry related functions, technical procedures and animal health and welfare activities to ensure that they are performed in a manner that is consistent with established policies and regulations.
* Under the direction of the BRC Training Manager, facilitate technical training for investigative staff and provide staff for designated workshops.
* Assist in collection and dissemination of data for managerial reports regarding facility utilization, staff labor allocation, and any other reports as may be required.
* Ensure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies.
* Participate on appropriate committees relevant to the advancement of the program and the profession.
* Participate in the development and implementation of division policies, procedures and organizational tools to ensure compliance with MCW, state and federal standards.
* Assist in the development and management of relevant budget activities.
* Participate in BRC Quality Assurance activities. Implement and conduct quality assurance processes to ensure the highest standards.
* Champion BRC continuous improvement initiatives and actively promote a continuous improvement culture. Utilize quality improvement tools facilitate improvement of systems & processes.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
A thorough knowledge of the proper care of research animals, and the standards and regulations governing their use is required. Work requires resource management, problem solving, coordinating work activities, critical thinking, systems analysis, operations analysis, time management, writing, customer focus, building trust, communication, critical thinking, influencing skills, accuracy, attention to detail, active listening, and active learning skills. Strong computer skills; computer and mobile device proficiency, particularly in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and email applications. Ability to adapt to changing priorities. Ability to maintain confidences. Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management. Compassion, patience, endurance.

Preferred Schedule:
Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.
Position Requirements:
Specifications
Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis
Minimum Required Education: Associate degree
Minimum Required Experience: 5 years Preferred Education: Degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary technician program
Preferred Experience: Research Animal Facility or related
Field: Animal Science, Veterinary Technology or related field
Certification: Certified Veterinary Technician at time of hire required. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the time of hire is preferred. Certification must be achieved within 12 months of appointment.
