Job Summary:

Horticulture technicians will design, grow, plant, and maintain annual plants for seasonal displays on the UW Madison campus. This position will work both outside as well as in the Grounds Department Greenhouse. Within the greenhouse facility staff grow thousands of annual plants for floral displays on campus. The displays include beds like the iconic W on University Avenue. When not in the greenhouse staff may also work on landscape beds at the Chancellors residence, System Presidents house or in the landscape beds of campus. These positions require the ability to work independently as well as being able to work in a group setting. This position will also have the opportunity to help set the floral displays for both winter and spring commencement ceremonies. This position will likely involve the use of landscape maintenance equipment ranging from hand tools to motorized equipment.


Responsibilities:
Supports the operational activities of a greenhouse facility, maintains plant production, records, and maintenance to ensure operational efficiencies.

  • 20% Executes the technical day-to-day operational activities of a greenhouse complex, botanical garden, or plant research project(s)
  • 20% Plans and implements instructional plant production schedules; determines and implements proper cultural practices for plant materials, disease and pest control practices, and plant requirements for light, temperature, moisture, and nutrition
  • 10% Coordinates the maintenance of a greenhouse facility, equipment, and environmental controls. May coordinate the care of animals and other organisms
  • 15% Maintains records of plant acquisitions and of greenhouse/garden activities and schedules
  • 10% Trains, assists, and monitors the work of students and unit staff as needed
  • 5% Serves as a horticultural expert and consultant to internal and external stakeholders. May assist with laboratory demonstrations when necessary
  • 10% Landscape maintenance at Chancellors Residence and Brittingham Estate
  • 10% Snow removal for UW Grounds Dept.

Qualifications:

Required:
-Availability for snow removal and overtime work as necessary.
-Ability to perform physical work, including lifting, bending, stooping, and kneeling for extended periods.
-Experience with the use of landscape maintenance equipment, ranging from hand tools to motorized equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:
-2 years of horticulture or landscape experience in a commercial setting.


License/Certification:

Required
Pesticide Applicator - State Licensure
The Pesticide Applicator - State Licensure within six months of hire.

Commercial pesticide license 3.1 Greenhouse and Nursery

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Monday-Friday, 7:00am- 3:30pm

The minimum hourly rate for this position is $20/hr, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Additional Information:

Must be available for snow removal and overtime work as necessary. Physical work requiring lifting, bending, steeping and kneeling for extended periods of time.

This position may require working in or around animal facilities on campus. Those working in or around animal facilities are required to complete an annual safety training and personnel medical evaluation form to gain clearance. Some areas have additional requirements for entry, including a TB test with negative results and measles titer test. We will provide trainings that will address hazards as well as how to safely perform job duties by, for example, following signage and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
