Job Summary:

This position will serve as a key member of the Department's administrative leadership team. The position will manage and engage in a variety of financial and accounting operations. Financial manager will be responsible for financial data management, financial reporting, auditing financials and navigating complex policies and procedures.

The Department of Population Health Sciences is one of the most academically productive Department in the School of Medicine and Public Health. The annual operational budget is over $8 million and there are endowment funds with a value of over $5 million. Faculty research interests and expertise are broad and varied and include epidemiology, health services research, health economics, informatics, demography, biostatistics, and environmental health. Several faculty members hold joint appointments in other departments and schools including Medicine, OB/GYN, Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, Mathematics, Family Medicine and Community Health, the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, and the La Follette School of Public Affairs.

This creates a dynamic, collaborative, and highly interdisciplinary research environment and an equally fulfilling professional home for a motivated professional. Regular interaction and consultation with principal investigators will be a key component of this role. We are especially enthusiastic to recruit an experienced financial professional who can take the department to new heights in terms of research financial management, funding reporting and process improvement, while continuing to significantly contribute to the management of the Department's population health research portfolio.


Responsibilities:
Guides financial and or accounting staff performing work in multiple finance functional areas and participates in day-to-day financial operations to ensure accuracy of financial transactions and reports, and/or supervises staff. Recommends and implements fiscal policies and advises on development of processes in support of efficient and compliant reporting.

  • 25% Plans, directs, and engages in financial and/or accounting operations for multiple areas; coordinates data management, budget preparation and management, and financial reporting efforts
  • 15% Identifies, verifies, and audits financial charges, credits, and authorizes payments
  • 10% Recommends, interprets, disseminates, and implements unit-focused fiscal policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with established rule, regulations and financial guidelines
  • 15% Analyzes financial information and makes recommendations to unit leadership
  • 15% Serves as a subject matter expert to unit leadership regarding financial operations, status and reporting, and recommends process improvements
  • 10% Assists principal investigators with financial management of sponsored program budgets and directs day-to-day fiscal transactions
  • 10% Works on receipt and setup of sponsored awards and agreements, as well as providing information and support for proposal preparation

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in financial management.
- Minimum of 3 years of proficiency and knowledge in accounting or financial principals, such as budgeting, financial projections, cost transfers and complex financial reporting.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Financial management experience at UW Madison or another highly regulated environment such as a university or government organization.

Skills & Abilities:
- Effective oral and written communication skills, independent problem-solving and analytical skills, attention to detail and organization, and an outgoing and energetic service-oriented approach required.
- Ability to be flexible and independent in work assignments and work effectively with faculty, staff, university administrators and funding agency representatives is critical.
- Ability to maintain current and comprehensive understanding of sponsor, campus, and divisional compliance policies and procedures.
- Ability to interpret and implement fiscal policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with established rules, regulations and financial guidelines.
- Ability to effectively use various software, including Microsoft Suite products, pivot tables, complex formulas.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

The minimum salary for the position is $90,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
