Overview

This is a remote role that may be hired in several markets across the United States with a preference to candidates located in Raleigh or Charlotte, NC.

Responsible for leading FCB's Commercial Bank Business Unit (BU) Oversight team, providing strategic leadership and oversight alignment to core elements of the FCB's Operational Risk framework, Risk Appetite, and regulatory expectations. This leader will contribute to and lead a team in providing independent operational risk oversight, risk advisory, and targeted evaluations for business units within Commercial Bank. Specific activities will include: 1) facilitating an ongoing independent and holistic assessment of operational risks through the application of defined risk management programs and techniques (e.g., RCSA, Risk Identification); 2) incorporating data on internal and external trends and factors that could impact Commercial Bank's operational risk exposure currently or in the future; 3) cultivating productive relationships with business unit partners and leaders; 4) maintaining a strong knowledge of operational risk management developments or changes within the organization, industry, and broader external operating environment.

To perform this role, a high level of interaction is required with business units and associates at all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate will have prior first- or second-line risk oversight leadership experience in a large financial institution. The successful candidate must further be able to positively influence a diverse audience of professionals including their peers and senior management, along with effectively communicating when required to regulators.


Responsibilities

  • Risk Oversight & Monitoring:
    • Directs, establishes, and oversees the application of core operational risk oversight policies, technology, and governance processes to ensure appropriate effective challenge of business unit operational risk exposures, including ensuring appropriate remediation plans are in place.
    • Develops effective relationships with business unit leaders to provide leading risk advisory, including consultation regarding business strategy as well as execution and delivery targeted risk evaluations within the Bank's defined methodology.
    • Provides independent oversight of operational risks through effective challenge using defined methodologies and subject matter expertise.
    • Provides transparent and timely escalation of top and emerging risks and risks not being managed within the FCB's stated Risk Appetite.
    • Partners with key internal stakeholders, both at the business unit/organizational levels, to maintain awareness of operational risk exposures and trends across the organization.
    • Assists in review and consultation to promote the enhancement of internal controls.
    • Identify control deficiencies and escalate applicable issues to management.
  • Risk Reporting:
    • Creates analyses and reports to support the appropriate identification, assessment, monitoring, and reporting of operational risk for business units across the Bank.
    • Compiles information and utilizes reports to bring key factors to executive attention.
    • Maintains a high level of attention to detail in the execution of their work.
    • Analyze data, identify trends, and summarize large amounts of information succinctly.
    • Experience using various tools and resources (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau) for dashboards and reporting
  • Establishes and monitors expectations to achieve company and department goals. Makes appropriate changes to policies, procedures, and efficiencies to meet objectives.
  • Manages the performance, training, and evaluation of assigned staff. Maximizes department achievements by providing professional development.
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of experience in Enterprise Risk or Operational Risk including leadership experience OR High School Diploma or GED and 14 years of experience in Enterprise Risk or Operational Risk including leadership experience

License or Certification Type: Related to audit or risk management certification (e.g. CIA, CISA, CRISC, CRMP, PRM) Preferred

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to develop and implement business strategies in large, complex organizations
  • Understanding of three lines of defense model and 2nd line effective challenge
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects
  • Effective at communicating audience-appropriate information to technical, management, and executive audiences
  • Proficiency in assessing risk and risk management practices
  • Knowledge of standard risk management or control frameworks and principles such as COSO, BCBS, NIST, ISO
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidance pertaining to enterprise risk and operational risk (i.e., FDIC, OCC, FRB, CFPB, etc.)
  • Knowledge of various bank/government regulatory requirements and processes
  • Ability to leverage relationship management capabilities and demonstrate problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Exceptional organization, analysis, decision making and problem resolution skills
  • Uses independent judgment and creativity to accomplish objectives
  • Must be able to meet deadlines, adapt to change, work well under pressure, and manage people
  • Advanced PC Skills including Microsoft Visio, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, etc.) or relevant professional designations
  • Experience managing professionals in a goal-focused environment
  • Experience working with a GRC application or regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of financial sector regulatory practices for a large financial institution.

The base pay for this position is generally between $180,000 and $230,000. Actual starting base pay will be determined based on skills, experience, location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law. For some roles, total compensation may also include variable incentives, bonuses, benefits, and/or other awards as outlined in the offer of employment.
