The Research Specialist 1 works in the M.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program starting 06/1/2025, to replace the current lab instructor to teach multiple advanced in-person lab courses offered by the program and co-mentorship/supervision of research internship students. The incumbent will help with the ongoing spring semester advanced cell culture lab classes, and also allow time for training before the Fall 2025 starts, in addition to preparation for the Fall 2025 research internship projects. The primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversee the lab management, organization, and maintenance of the M.S. Biochemistry research internship labs and cell culture teaching labs.
  • Co-mentor, train, and supervise research internship students to complete their internship projects in the department and training them in different cell culture, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques.
  • Assist the Program Director in researching and developing additional reagents (DNA constructs, established cell lines, etc) for use in internship projects.
  • Teach as the lab instructor for three lab-based courses in the program, including Applications of Cell Culture (spring), Programmed Cell Death lab (fall), and Immunotechniques in Biochemistry (fall) lab courses for the graduate students.
  • Help Professors in preparing and proctoring exams for program courses.
  • Assist in ongoing biomedical research and development projects of the program director and graduate faculty in the MS Biochem program.


Work Interactions

The incumbent will report to Dr. C. Rosenthal, the director of the M.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program, and work with other lab instructors and research specialists in the program, and will have direct interaction with students through the lab courses and internship projects. The incumbent will interact on a need be basis with GUMC faculty, staff, and administrators. Performing the multiple tasks and duties for this position is crucial for the normal functioning and smooth running of the department and the M.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's preferred
  • 3 or more years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Teaching skills and experience preferred
  • Advanced use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and advanced use of email and web-based applications are preferred qualifications

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$20.16 - $31.30

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
