Summary of Role:
The Manager Climate Resilience is a key member of the Global Sustainability Team within the Legal Department. This role involves leading the climate resilience strategy for agricultural ingredients, plus designing and driving a decarbonization strategy based on climate risk, scientific best practices, and business priorities. This senior manager will also inform Hershey's broader climate transition, focusing on creating positive impacts and addressing environmental risks, especially within the ingredients portfolio.
The Manager Climate Resilience will determine the environmental risks and opportunities arising from climate change predominately in agricultural ingredients, including how this may impact Hershey's business now and into the future. They will co-create climate risk mitigation and adaptation strategies with key business units and explore external partnership and collaboration opportunities to promote business resilience.
This role will oversee the implementation of the climate resilience strategy for agricultural ingredients including progress measurement and business case development. The Senior Manager Climate Resilience will demonstrate business first thinking and drive efforts to improve organizational capability. Working with the Head of Environmental Sustainability they will also drive cross-enterprise collaboration, for business processes that enable a smoother climate transition such as (but not limited to) carbon pricing strategies, carbon credits, procurement strategies and supplier engagement.
Role Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead the climate resilience and decarbonization strategy for agricultural ingredients.
- Identify, measure and interpret climate related risks primarily in agricultural ingredients.
- Collaborate with key business units (sourcing, R&D, etc.) to develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. This may include challenging conventional ways of working with supply chains and procurement strategies to achieve a fresh approach to achieving business resiliency.
- Supervise the execution and implementation of the ingredient climate resilience strategy, including tracking progress and measuring ROI.
- Steward 2030 ingredient-specific carbon abatement roadmaps. Refresh as needed with business changes or technological advancements. Monitor the impact of decarbonization investments and assess ROI-driven decisions for decarbonization that clearly support enhancements in business resiliency.
- Develop long term decarbonization goals (beyond 2030).
- Integrate nature, water, or biodiversity considerations where relevant.
- Support broader ESG reporting requirements on climate performance as required
- Create an enabling environment for decarbonization.
- Work with the responsible sourcing team to define a supplier engagement strategy for prioritized ingredients, and options for program expansion.
- Proactively seek out external partnership and collaboration opportunities that drive impactful decarbonization.
- Collaborate with business partners across Procurement, Finance and R&D to identify and execute carbon mitigation enabling actions such as carbon pricing strategies, carbon credits, and other procurement strategies.
Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Experience in developing decarbonization strategies, with a strong technical understanding of climate risk and agricultural supply chains.
Business acumen and partnering skills to drive ownership and delivery through others.This newly created role is a single contributor position and will serve as the Climate Subject Matter Expert (SME) for The Hershey Company.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Education -
- Bachelor's degree in an environmental and/or sustainability field required.
- An advanced degree in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, climate science, sustainability, or a related field highly preferred
- Experience -
- 8+ years experience in sustainability field, with at least 3 years in food and agriculture, with demonstrable climate and/or nature stewardship.
- Technical understanding of climate risks, impacts and opportunities in the supply chain, specifically agricultural settings.
- FLAG decarbonization and roadmap development and execution.
- Good business acumen and excellent business partnering skills to drive ownership and delivery though others.
- Clear systems thinking and strong influencing skills.
- Confidence in holding a business accountable to deliver an agreed strategy.
- Experience identifying and building external partnerships and collaborations needed to deliver a strategy.
- A creative mindset to innovative resourcing models
- Nice to have: Experience on water and nature mitigation as part of demonstrating a holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
