Essential Job Duties
Join the Building Maintenance and Operations department as a Journey-Level Facilities Maintenance Technician and play a vital role in supporting the functionality and comfort of NC State's campus facilities. This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and operating heating, cooling, and steam/hot water boilers, along with their auxiliary equipment within a designated maintenance service zone.
You will also install HVAC systems and perform minor plumbing and piping installations as needed. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in electrical systems up to 600 VAC-including the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of secondary electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators
  • Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and associated equipment/fixtures
  • Install gas, water, and sanitary fixtures/equipment, including necessary supports
  • Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment per manufacturer guidelines
  • Identify and correct faults, defects, and malfunctions in secondary electrical systems and control circuits
  • Develop solutions for standard and occasional non-standard repairs in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems
  • Ensure operational and safety procedures are followed and comply with regulatory standards.
  • Replace and maintain temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, and sensors as needed

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
  • Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Experience in a skilled trade

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the trade areas of electrical, HVAC, and plumbing
Required License or Certification
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
