Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Advanced Fuel Fabrication (AFF) Group in the Nuclear Fuel Development (NFD) Section within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division is seeking a technician to support chemical synthesis of sol-gel microspheres and to perform the daily activities associated with materials production and laboratory upkeep. The AFF group is a global leader in the fabrication of next generation nuclear fuels, high temperature ceramics, and materials supporting radioisotope synthesis. This position would support the development and implementation of technologies in these areas and beyond. This individual will work closely with research and technical staff to establish new laboratory capabilities and support the production of ceramic microspheres. Additionally, the hired candidate will support experimental investigations aimed at optimization of wet chemistry routes to produce actinide compounds and refractory ceramics of controlled composition and structure. The individual selected for this position will be responsible for exercising and maintaining fabrication capabilities. They will be encouraged to engage with staff within the AFF group and NFD section to foster a vibrant research atmosphere to grow capabilities and drive innovation within the group and section.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with team members in the areas of fabrication, property measurements, and other relevant areas to advance science-based understanding of nuclear fuels and materials.
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for QA, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety.
  • Perform chemical syntheses and reactions in radiological materials laboratories dedicated for synthesis and characterization of sol-gel microspheres.
  • Assembly, disassembly, and troubleshooting of research equipment.
  • Maintaining the laboratory space and equipment while fostering a safe work culture.
  • Demonstrate dedication to teamwork and a positive culture within the organization.
  • Support generation of data for deliverables (journal publications, reports) to meet sponsor milestones and communicate research outcomes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • ASdegree in one of the chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in a laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with wet chemistry techniques.
  • Experience working with radiological materials.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Evidence of success in independently driven outcomes and through contributions to collaborative teams.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment.
