A Brief Overview This role is responsible for coordinating and managing all functions for the Mothers' Milk Bank (MMB). The MMB is an HMBANA accredited milk bank where raw human milk donations are accepted from approved donors, stored and pasteurized on site for dispensation to patients. Job responsibilities include coordinating screening and serology of potential donors, management of the clinical data and flow of human milk donations and the processing of human milk according to HMBANA, FDA and good manufacturing guidelines.
Additionally, the coordinator collaborates with and provides clinical support to the lactation program.
What you will do
- Communication
- Communicates with HMBANA, enteral feeding preparation and lactation leadership as needed
- Facilitates the process of donation with mothers of inpatients through collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Proactive in problem solving when clinical/operational issues arise and escalates concerns in a timely manner.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the team. Coordinates agenda for quarterly MMB board meetings.
- Donor management:
- Recruitment and screening of potential donors.
- Organizes required health history forms
- Facilitates serology testing
- Ensures compliance with donor eligibility criteria.
- Maintains ongoing communication with donors providing education, obtaining updates and answering questions.
- Maintains accurate documentation of screening results, donor information and milk donations.
- Milk processing and distribution:
- Coordinates the collection, processing, and storage of donated milk.
- Performs pasteurization as needed
- Continually evaluates technique of pasteurization of donor milk to prevent deviations from standards.
- Educates tech staff regarding best practices and performance improvement
- Ensures adherence to quality control standards and safety protocols.
- Facilitates the distribution of processed milk to recipients.
- Inventory Management:
- Monitors milk inventory levels, ensuring adequate supplies are available for recipients.
- Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with relevant regulations and standards, such as those set by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).
- Quality Control: Implements and maintain quality control procedures to ensure the safety and efficacy of donated milk.
- Participates in timely policy and procedure review and revisions.
- Plays active role in annual audits and recalls.
- Administrative Tasks:
- Record Keeping: Maintains accurate records of donor information, milk donations, and distributions.
- Data Analysis: Analyzes data related to milk donations, recipient needs, and program performance.
- Reporting: Prepares reports on milk bank activities and performance.
- Orients and provides in-service education for staff.
- Promotion and Outreach:
- Promotes the benefits of human milk banking and educate the public about the importance of donor milk.
- Collaborates with healthcare providers and other organizations to support the milk bank's mission.
- Serves as a liaison between the milk bank and its stakeholders, including donors, recipients, and healthcare professionals.
- Coordinates student and observers interested in learning about milk banking.
Education Qualifications
- Associate's Degree Health related field Required
- Bachelor's Degree Health related field Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least two (2) years related clinical experience Required
- Previous experience in a healthcare related environment Preferred
- Previous experience in milk banking Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of lactation (Preferred proficiency)
- Knowledge of guidelines for Human Milk Banking as developed by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. (Required proficiency)
- Requires effective written and verbal communication skills. (Required proficiency)

- Use of MS Outlook email, opening attachments, attaching files to emails, and saving attached files to computer. (Required proficiency)
- Use of shared network file space. (Required proficiency)
- Navigation and use of clinical communication systems (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- International Board Certification Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) - upon hire - Required or
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist - Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) - upon hire - Required or
- Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or
- Occupational Therapist (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or
- Speech & Language Pathology License (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or
- Licensed Physical Therapist (PT) (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or
- Dietetic Technician-Registered (DTR) - Commission on Dietetic Registration - upon hire - Required or
