The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. This is a full-timeposition located in Kansas City, KS.

Travel is required approximately 40-50%.

Key responsibilities may include:

Position reports to Engineer Signals III- Detectors

Coordinate, administrate, and review the estimating and design activities of signal detector system projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the requirements of our customers.

Review, create, and analyze signal project layouts, field surveys, and field diagnostic team requests to ensure BNSF, FRA (Federal Railroad Administration), and AAR (Association of American Railroads) standards and recommended practices can be met before estimating and initiating projects.

Keep departmental project tracking and scheduling databases up to date for assigned projects.

Provide technical assistance on signal circuitry and programming to field maintenance/construction personnel and other engineering staff.

Review vendor invoices for services rendered and prepare requests for payment against the appropriate projects.

Relocation assistance may be offered based on business needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Requires 2-3 years of formal technical training in electricity/electronics.
  • Computer skills: requires proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Requires a working knowledge of wayside train signal and crossing warning safety circuit logic and general knowledge of signal engineering principles and practices, including design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Requires a working knowledge of all Federal, State, and Local regulations as they apply to signaling practices.
  • Must have analytical ability, be innovative and resourceful, and be able to communicate accurately on technical subjects.
  • Must either have, or be able to quickly acquire, computer aided technical drawing management expertise.
  • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently with all levels of BNSF management and personnel as a team dedicated to fulfilling corporate goals.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience in railroad Signal system design, construction, or maintenance.
