We are excited to announce an exciting job opportunity at our Severn Beach, Bristol location! We are looking for a talented Technical Author to join our dynamic and rapidly growing global team on a permanent basis. In this role, you will create and refine highly technical documentation, prioritising content validation and review. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication abilities and will collaborate effectively across various departments with diverse stakeholders. At Oxford Instruments, our commitment to our customers is paramount; this position is pivotal in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and timeliness needed to exceed our customers' expectations.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Develop and maintain clear and concise technical documentation to support our high-tech product range.



  • Peer review work by other authors, following internal guidance for editing and accuracy.



  • Become familiar with our product range and the 3rd party components.



  • Test and update documentation, including working in our onsite lab to validate procedures.



  • Edit images and technical illustrations used throughout the documentation.



  • Collaborate with engineers and managers to clarify any technical queries professional manner.



  • Liaise with subject-matter experts to generate documentation for project launches and internal/external customer support.



  • Adhere to document version control and branching procedures.


  • Ensure technical information is organised, managed and published within the required timescales.

  • Work with external providers such as printers and translators.



  • Minimum of three days on site, to enable hands-on validation of documentation in our lab.





Education/Qualifications:




  • A recognised technical authoring qualification (ISTC, NVQ, Diploma, etc.) or equivalent experience.


  • Minimum experience of three years in a technical author role.

  • High level of competence in authoring software, preferably MadCap Flare, Adobe Acrobat and SolidWorks/Solid Edge.



  • Ideally, experience in either the semiconductor, electro-mechanical or scientific sector.



  • Experience of writing documentation for scientific instrumentation is highly desirable.



  • Experience in applying Simplified Technical English is an advantage.





Professional Skills/Abilities:




  • Excellent technical writing capabilities including experience in writing procedural information for the operation and maintenance of technical products.



  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.



  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.



  • Familiarity with document control procedures such as branching, versioning and document review cycles.


  • Good proofreading and peer review skills.

  • Good presentation skills, including being able to demonstrate internal procedures to other authors.



  • Excellent technical comprehension, including the ability to understand the detailed function and performance of complex products and systems.



  • Good time management skills with the ability to deliver to deadlines.



  • The ability to take in and communicate technical detail, and to summarise appropriately for the audience.





Personal Qualities:




  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop relationships across teams.



  • Able to communicate clearly with a wide range of colleagues in an appropriate way, including technicians, engineers and software developers.



  • A good team player able to demonstrate emotional intelligence and an appreciation of other people's skills, abilities and experience.


  • Excellent problem-solving ability, remaining calm under pressure.
  • Able and willing to travel on occasions.
