As a nonprofit organization, we are solely committed to supporting people with special needs and their families, to help make it One World. For Everyone. Bancroft is currently seeking a School Nurse/Part time located at the Bancroft School in Mt Laurel, NJ.



Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing for Children's Services, and Sr. Director of Nursing, and the School Principal(s), and operating within personal license constraints in strict accordance with approved American Nurses Association Standards of School Nursing Practices, N.J. Department of Education Administrative Code and Amendments, and established Bancroft policies and procedures, provides various health services to screen, identify, assess, and address students' healthcare needs:

In addition to performing all of the duties as defined for the School Nurse:

1a) Provides health counseling and education for students, family members/guardians, and staff members;

    b) Implements and monitors a communicable disease and infection control program to promptly identify and assess the infectious condition, appropriately communicate each situation to appropriate parties in an effort to alleviate individual and group health concerns, and aid in the reduction of absenteeism of students and staff;
  1. c) Participates in the child study team process by interpreting significant findings of health history, physical assessment, and reports of medical consultants and provides information pertinent to each student's individual situation;
  2. d) Consults with staff, Principal, and/or staff regarding modification or change in educational environment necessitated by the student's developmental or health status within the limits of confidentiality;
  3. f) Participates in the health education program by providing health instruction and in-service education; Initiates, facilitates, and maintains liaison between the Schools, the community, and health agencies;
  4. g) Implements appropriate action pertaining to state, county, and local School District health laws and regulations governing public schools;
  5. h) Evaluates the effectiveness, comprehensiveness, and continuity of interventions to determine adequacy and/or modification of current treatment plan.

2)Performs the following responsibilities as defined within the N.J. Department of Education Administrative Code and Amendments:

  • Provides instruction to school faculty on communicable diseases and other health concerns;
  • Provides training and direction regarding the emergency administration of epinephrine for Schools' staff;
  • Reviews, summarizes, and transmits available health and medical information of individual students for review and assessment by child study team members;
  • Writes and updates, at least annually, the accommodation plan including the individualized health plan required under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 for any student requiring such plans.

3)Provides ongoing guidance, support and acts as a lead for the other Registered Nurses in Education:

  • Provides ongoing leadership, advice, training, and guidance to Registered Nurse(s) in Education in the performance of health services, medical activities, and nursing tasks;
  • Ensures proper staffing levels and work distribution;
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and attends various management meetings to promote a constant flow of information, open discussions, knowledge sharing, and to keep staff well-informed;
  • Attends various internal management meetings, external conferences, family conferences, etc., to both obtain and share information;
  • Supports the professional development and career growth of Registered Nurses in Education by, along with the Director of Nursing (ABH), identifying and providing ongoing training and certification attainment in accordance with state licensing regulations and any accreditation standards, as applicable.

4) Maintains ongoing awareness of current and changing nursing statutes and regulations, state/county/local School District health laws and regulations governing public schools, current and developing health programs and services, etc., by performing independent research, attending learning workshops, reading journals, attending in-service workshops, etc. Strives to enhance own professional growth and incorporate findings into practice with the objective of strengthening and facilitating the educational process for all students.

5.Interacts on a regular basis and effectively communicates with students, family members, School Principal(s) and faculty members, discipline-specific clinical staff, primary physicians, healthcare providers, direct care givers, Nursing Department management and nursing staff, Sr. VP and Medical Director, and school district representatives, state and federal regulatory agencies, Social Workers, etc. to attain and maintain optimal health and health attitudes and assisting in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning process.

6.Facilitates a team approach to Schools' health services program development, implementation, and monitoring by effectively collaborating with all specialty/clinical disciplines, parents/guardians, School Districts, etc., to identify and best meet the individual health and learning needs of each student.

7.Builds and maintains effective relationships with students and their family members/guardians to promote a sense of trust and confidence with the role of Nursing within Education.

8.Participates in admission screenings for students to assess individual potential for learning from the applicable clinical perspective, provide recommendations for a potential student's appropriateness for the Schools' program and class placements.

9.Assists with crisis management, as needed, through de-escalation techniques, staff support, and assistance. Follows state-approved emergency procedures and utilizes Bancroft-approved crisis intervention techniques at all times.

12.Ensures the site operates in accordance with the organization's quality standards for safety, security, and cleanliness, as well as applicable state licensing and accreditation standards.

11.Willingly cooperates in any inspections or investigations to include both internal and external investigations and/or inspection processes.

12.Provides other health services and management tasks within the Schools, as needed. Remains flexible and adaptable in work schedules and work assignments as defined by educational and individual student needs.

13.Abides by the Bancroft Code of Ethics, Mission Statement, and Vision Statement in promoting ethical behavior, establishing relationships and providing guidance in decision-making situations.

14.Remains current with required training certifications, meets state-regulated licensing and regulatory accreditations, and adheres to mandatory requirements.

15.Maintains effective verbal and written communications with colleagues, those served, and their family members and/or guardians when applicable.



Qualifications

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing, a certificate issued by the N.J. Department of Education, State Board of Examiners and a current and valid N.J. license are required. A minimum of one year of general nursing experience preferred working with the developmentally disabled and/or the traumatically brain injured.

Special Skills:

Knowledge of nursing/clinical operations and procedures required, as well as a knowledge of primary care principles and practices. Ability to observe, assess, and record individual medical symptoms, reactions, and progress required. Knowledge of emergency medical procedures, of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration required. Effective communication, interpersonal skills, management, and organization skills required. Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for the delivery of medical assessment and treatment required. Valid driver's license required in incumbent's legal name and current address with no provisional restrictions. Minimum 18 years of age required.
