Overview

Position Highlights: Expanded Care Infusion

  • Number of beds on unit: Infusion unit that with 10 infusions spaced, 9 chair spaces and 1 infusion room
  • Patient population (age, diagnosis, specifics about unit): 18 months to geriatric, multiple diagnosis from all outpatient care provider departments. We provide infusions, injections, laboratory services, picc line insertions and many other process to help assure patients remain in outpatient setting. We help serve patients that have multiple sclerosis, Chron's disease, blood disorders, infections, along with many more chronic and acute illness.
  • Nurse to Patient ratio: 30-40 patients per day (equivalent to about 10-15 patients per nurse per day
  • Department culture and resources: Small unit with close team that strives to provide efficient care and flexibility to our Carle patrons. The team relies on good communication within the team due to phone triage, in person appointments, and the unique needs of high cost dollar medications for major illness diagnosis. Our team needs to rely on each other as we usually only have 3 nurses working in the department per shift. We resource pediatric child life services, Stat nurse for IV infusion needs, PICC line insertion team, Chemo and inpatient pharmacy, and outpatient clinic departments to support our patients.
  • Frequent nursing skills/equipment used: IV insertion skills a must, PALS, ACLS, Chemo certification (obtained within 6 months of hire), phlebotomy techniques (taught on orientation), phone communication, customer service skills, and critical thinking based on orders provided. Use of plum pump, removal of CADD chemo pumps. Basic BLS.

The Expanded Care nurse is a specialized infusion registered nurse who acts as a professional caregiver as a member of the interdisciplinary team. The nurse will also promote a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach towards patients, families and all members of the care delivery team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to administering chemo and removal of chemo pumps, IV infusions/injections, IV antibiotic teaching, blood products, therapeutic phlebotomies, coordination and provision of direct and indirect patient care, and the documentation of care.


Qualifications

Certifications: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 1 year - American Heart Association (AHA); Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR); Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course 1 year - Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON); Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 1 year - American Heart Association (AHA), Education: H.S. Diploma/GED, Work Experience:
Responsibilities

Work within a team-driven setting to drive results and provide customer satisfaction to our clinicians, while being able to work independently on assigned tasksEnsures ordering providers office has entered appropriate orders and obtained insurance authorization and referral prior to scheduling or treating patients.Entering and releasing therapy plans to coordinate care of patient populationAdministers medications as prescribed or in accordance with approved algorithm(s), and document appropriate medical justification and effectiveness.Performs ongoing supervison of patient response with each patient visit and documents in the patient medical record.Provides patient documentation via notes in electronic medical record according to department policy, including treatment notes and patient response to treatment.Communicates with physicians and pharmacists via phone or electronic medical record regarding patient updates and condition changes.Schedules appointments and effectively communicates appointment schedule and expectations to patients.Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and standards of behavior.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $33.68per hour - $57.93per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
