General Purpose of Job: As a full member of the healthcare team, the chaplain assists with emotional and spiritual issues in the healing process. Specifically, the chaplain uses professional training and certification to assist patients, loved ones, and staff/Caregivers to understand more fully life's events in relation to spiritual and emotional well-being, addressing both personal and professional needs. In addition, the chaplain supports departmental initiatives. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Initiate and provide pastoral care to patients/families with priority given to referrals, critical care, and end-of-life patients.
- Complete appropriate written and electronic documentation, including in patient charts.
- Provide pastoral care to Caregivers, physicians, volunteers, and hospital students, as needed.
- Work closely with team members to ensure the pastoral care office is being managed appropriately.
- Shared responsibilities for supporting On-Call Chaplains including but not limited to: monthly meetings, scheduling, and providing on-call backup.
- Develop, implement, and communicate Pastoral Care Department goals and objectives.
- In collaboration with the team, will plan, organize, direct and evaluate the pastoral care function and services in order to make recommendations for continuous quality improvements including the development of programs, projects, and policy updates.
- Participate in the talent acquisition process when there are vacancies in the department.
- Help to interpret and evaluate ethical and moral situations in health care delivery to ensure the dignity and rights of the patient.
- Provide understanding of, and education on, spiritual and religious issues to the health system as appropriate.
- Serve on planning and decision-making committees of the health care system as appropriate.
- Provide and coordinate worship, ritual, and sacramental experiences for Caregivers and patients.
- May serve as invocator for hospital and community events.
- Work with local clergy in the delivery of quality Pastoral Care to meet the needs of a spiritually and religiously diverse patient base
Job Requirements
General Requirements |
Board Certified Chaplain or certifiable through the Association of Professional Chaplains/Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. or one of APC/BCCI's recognized organizational partners. Authorized for ministry (typically through ordination) and endorsed by their denomination to serve in a Specialized Pastoral Care setting |
Work Experience |
Pastoral care experience in a general hospital setting preferred. |
Education |
Masters of Divinity or equivalent Four Units of Clinical Pastoral Education in a hospital setting |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
Strong interpersonal skills, including appropriate boundaries Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated ability to obtain information on teachings and practices of religions of those served Ability to fill traditional roles of clergy Demonstrated ability to be empathetic and a good listener Comfortable with own feelings and expression of emotions as well as others' Ability to work independently throughout the health system Ability to successfully interact with a diverse patient base Efficient computer skills |
