PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level in the construction, maintenance, and repair of wooden articles, equipment, and structures. Work involves responsibility for performing skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade. Work requires independent judgment across various degrees of specialization depending on the location of assignments and includes some supervision over helpers. Oral and written instructions received are frequently accompanied by sketches or blueprints, and work is reviewed by a supervisor for compliance with specifications and standards.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs general carpentry work in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, scaffolding, wood fixtures, and furniture.
  • Repairs tables, chairs, benches, and cupboards; builds concrete forms; lays sub-flooring and does sheathing.
  • Does skilled bench work in a carpenter shop, operating power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, and boring, sanding and mortising machines?
  • Cleans, sharpens, and repairs hand and bench tools.
  • Makes estimates of time and material required for assigned tasks and keeps simple records.
  • Supervises and instructs semi-skilled and unskilled helpers.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records.
  • Frames, installs, adjusts, repairs and fabricates items such as partitions, walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, stairs, cabinets, counters, platforms, shelves and new installation of locks, including all hardware and finish work associated with the trade, including laying tile and installing wood and steel framing and sheetrock.
  • Could be called upon to do locksmith related duties such as completing door repairs, hardware adjustments, replacements and processing key requests per BOE protocols.
  • Performs other related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school, and 3 to 5 years' experience in the carpentry trade or completion of an approved apprenticeship; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the trade and the qualities and uses of various woods and related materials.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to make simple estimates of time and materials.
  • Ability to inspect lumber for grade and quality.
  • Ability to work from sketches, plans and to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to instruct and direct the efforts of laborers and helpers.
  • Skill in the use of tools, materials, and equipment common to the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to read blueprints.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess and maintain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • The appointing authority may require a physical examination at the time of appointment and semi-annually to determine the physical fitness required to perform the duties of the job.
  • Contractor's license preferred.


SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Tested" position.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 24 / Trades.
