Overview

Waters Corporation is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to become a key contributor of our Light scattering techonology in Santa Barbara, California. In this role, the individual will sustain the exiting light scattering instruments and drive new product innovation in the development of next generation bioanalytical instruments.

Working in a multi-disciplinary environment where high precision mechanical design intersects with physics, electronics, firmware, software and chemistry, the contributor will be responsible for multiple aspects of mechanical design, analysis and test of subsystems and complete instruments from concept through to production.



Responsibilities

    Implement design changes for continuous improvements of existing light scattering instruments.
  • Assist in the design and prototyping of new instrument development.
  • Design mechanical components, including machine parts, sheet metal, cabling, molding, and assemblies.
  • Prepare technical drawings in accordance with the current ASME Y14.M standard.
  • Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, optical, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
  • Build, rework, and test prototypes to ensure they meet specification and functionality requirements.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency with tooling design; perform failure analysis and resolve the root causes of failures in manufacturing, service, and customer site.
  • Coordinate with vendors for prototyping and production purchases of parts and assemblies.
  • Address vendor-related quality and performance issues.
  • Prepare documentation for engineering changes.
  • Perform other related tasks as directed by supervisor.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred

Experience:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 3 years of industry experience with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; or 1 years industry experience and a Master's degree; or equivalent work experience

Skills:

  • Proficiency designing precision mechanical components and assemblies taking into consideration design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, interchangeability, ease of assembly, and cost
  • Proficiency using 3D parametric modeling software (preferably Autodesk Inventor)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 2009 as well as industry drafting standards
  • Strong hands-on skills in prototyping, 3D printing, and operating basic machine shop equipemnt (end mill, lathe, bend saw, and so on)
  • Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacture) methodology
  • Experience processing ECO's, practicing organized revision control using a Product Data Management tool (PDM, Autodesk Vault, Arena)
  • Fluency in English - written and spoken
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with management, peers, suppliers and customers.
