Summary:
The Associate Chief Medical Officer, Quality and Safety - UNC Rex reports to the Chief Medical Officer, Vice President for Medical Affairs. The position is part-time, and this Associate VP role is a premier opportunity for a dynamic leader ready to step into a high-impact executive position with continued growth across the organization. Primary responsibilities include assisting the CMO in leading quality improvement initiatives, the patient safety program, medical staff peer review, credentialing, and education at UNC Health Rex. This position will work collaboratively with the Patient Safety Officer, Accreditation, Risk Management, Infection Prevention, Performance Improvement, the Medical Staff Office, nursing leadership, and department chairs/medical directors.
Responsibilities:
Quality & Safety:
- Provides strategic leadership for projects related to quality and safety.
- Co-chairs key quality and performance improvement committees, including but not limited to the Mortality Review Committee and the Sepsis Committee.
- Serves on the Patient Safety Subcommittee, Performance Improvement Committee, and the Quality and Patient Safety Committee.
- Provides clinical leadership in The Joint Commission (TJC) and other accreditation activities to ensure ongoing readiness for regulatory surveys.
- Provides leadership to the Credentials Committee and Medical Staff Peer Review Committee.
- Attends other medical staff departmental meetings as needed and serve as a liaison to the Executive Team.
- Analyzes data to monitor performance and identify trends and areas for improvement in clinical services.
- Collaborates with department chairs and medical directors to ensure compliance with clinical policies, regulations, and focused/ongoing professional practice evaluations.
- Performs regular review of policies and standing orders related to medical staff.
- Oversees GME and medical/APP student training activities.

Education Requirements:
* Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Board certification in a medical specialty.
* Must have received or will complete training in quality improvement methods (Lean, Six Sigma, IHI, or equivalent) and patient safety (Team STEPPS or equivalent) within one year of hire.
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Requires ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience and seven (7) years of leadership experience.
* Demonstrated experience in at least one quality improvement/patient safety initiative, aligning with organizational priorities (healthcare acquired infections, sepsis, mortality, unintentional retained surgical items, readmissions, patient experience).
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* Knowledge of publicly reported programs, key quality metrics, and credentialing preferred.
