About this Position

Pinyon is seeking a full-time, salaried Archaeological Field Director with extensive field experience in Arizona and other Four Corners states. A successful candidate will be collaborative, organized, and professional. This role involves conducting and/or assisting in Class I, II, and III cultural resources inventories and supporting permitting and compliance.

The Field Director will report to the Archaeological Resources Group Manager and work closely with Principal Investigators and Project Managers. Responsibilities include implementing inventory methods and ensuring findings are documented in accordance with applicable standards and guidelines.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise archaeological field staff during surveys, testing, and monitoring efforts
  • Identify, document, and evaluate archaeological sites (both precontact and historic)
  • Conduct NRHP eligibility assessments, including site testing and detailed documentation
  • Oversee fieldwork quality, review field notes and paperwork, and ensure compliance with procedures
  • Perform background research and prepare desktop assessments for project planning
  • Analyze artifacts and soil characteristics, monitor construction projects for potential impacts
  • Write clear, thorough technical reports and collaborate with team members to meet deadlines and goals


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • MS or MA degree in Anthropology or Archaeology
  • Meet the Secretary of Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36 CFR 61)
  • communications skills
  • Ability to conduct pedestrian inventory up to 8 miles per day carrying 40 pounds of gear
  • Be able to safely perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions
  • Knowledge/experience with anticipated/typical Colorado Plateau, Rocky Mountains, Four Corners, and Great Basin cultural resources
  • Two to six years of experience conducting Class III cultural resource inventories and associated reporting
  • Knowledge of Section 106, Section 4(f) Compliance, ARPA, NAGPRA, Antiquities Act, and relevant state legislation
  • Qualified for listing on federal and state permits as Field Director and/or Principal Investigator in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and/or New Mexico
  • Knowledge of ASM & ADOT processes from scoping through consultation
  • Knowledge of field data collection and site forms
  • Field crew supervisory or field director experience
  • Technical writing and document review
  • Ability to travel
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agencies, and other project stakeholders, of all levels and diverse backgrounds
