Job Summary

To report to the Practice Manager, the purpose of this job is to handle time-consuming clerical responsibilities for physicians during office based patient encounters. Scribes accompany a physician and directly observe patient encounters. They accurately document the events and decision-making in a manner that results in appropriate medical charting. Scribes also complete clerical activities necessary to assist with processing of physician orders for tests and medications. The intent of this position is to perform time-consuming clerical duties that otherwise would be assigned to a physician enabling the physician to spend more time with individual patients and increase the overall flow of patients in the practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accompany physician into the patient examination room in order to transcribe into the EMR a history and physical exam, and document accurately the physician's encounter with the patient and others present.

  • Enter all proper diagnoses and symptoms as well as follow up instructions and prescriptions as dictated by the physician.

  • Enter patient orders as dictated by the physician including laboratory tests, radiology tests, medications, etc.

  • Under the supervision of the prescribing provider, may send prescriptions to the patients preferred pharmacy.

  • Document any procedures performed by the physician.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, staff and management.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred

Minimum Experience

6 months experience as a Medical Scribe or 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensure, Registry or Certification Required

Licensed healthcare professional or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant by American Medical Technologists, or NRCMA by National Association by Health.

BLS certification required.

Other Skills/Knowledge

Knowledge of Medical Terminology required, ICD 9 & 10 coding training highly preferred.
