Job Summary

Collaborates with departmental leadership to ensure proper education, training, and competencies are completed for Sterile Processing Technicians. Requires working within the standards and guidelines of multiple industry agencies (including, but not limiting to TJC, AAMI, FDA, CDC, AORN). If structurally necessary, the educator also serves as a liaison to promote sterilization, decontamination, and assembly processes for other market facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for developing and implementing all education and competencies in decontamination, assembly, sterilization processes and standard precautions for the department. Effectively and efficiently identifies, interprets, and disseminates timely education to ensure professional development. Utilizes hands-on continuous training to include all shifts.

  • Conducts the initial and continuous assessments of skills and knowledge for staff members. Promotes performance improvement and routinely audits for quality control related to technical skills. Participates in staff performance review process, including providing feedback to management regarding competency and completion of required educational programs.

  • Maintains employee education files--competencies, continuing education units, and any documentation required by Prisma Health or regulatory agencies--for all team members in the department to include the manager and supervisors.

  • Ensures the departments meet all regulations, standards, and guidelines consistent with AAMI, AORN, TJC, CMS, CDC, OSHA, and FDA requirements, as well as Prisma Health policies and procedures. Maintains and updates knowledge of industry standards and evidence-based practices through active research and participation in relevant professional organizations. Training materials will be based on the guidelines and policies of the organizations mentioned here.

  • Develops/implements monthly and weekly education plans for individual employees, such as those training in orientation and those needing skill re-education, as well as coordinates on-site training provided by outside vendors. Routinely presents at staff meetings.

  • Assists in maintenance and expanded utilization of department's electronic tray management system. Responsible for training all new staff to utilize the management system appropriately.

  • Represents Sterile Processing in any required interdepartmental or interdisciplinary projects/committees/task forces. Partners with outside departments and regional educational facilities and to coordinate clinical rotations and shadowing days as necessary.

  • Participates in the creation and revision of policies and procedures related to the department.

  • Performs as a Sterile Processing Technician when education responsibilities are not required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This job is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Job-related coursework beyond high school. Surgical Tech, Sterile Processing Tech, or Dental Assistant training program.

  • Experience - Two (2) years of CSPD (Sterile Processing) experience

In Lieu Of

  • In lieu of the education requirement only, will accept High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years related experience.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Certification as either: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association); OR CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician) from CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution)

  • Certification as CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) from HSPA or CSIS (Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist) from CBSPD preferred.

  • Applicants without CIS or CSIS certification will be required to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
