The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Transportation Technician who will play a crucial role in overseeing construction projects and conducting materials inspections. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including the inspection of bridges, drafting plans for highways and bridges, and performing essential calculations related to both inspection and drafting processes. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, the employee will undertake a variety of entry-level technical responsibilities that span the full spectrum of PennDOT's operations, including design, construction, and maintenance tasks. The individual will play a crucial role in providing engineering support while developing a solid understanding of the department's policies, procedures, organizational structure, and workflow processes. The training program is designed to include a series of assignments that will familiarize employees with district personnel and operational protocols. Furthermore, participants will engage in classroom training sessions as specified by the program coordinator. As training advances, responsibilities will expand to include the evaluation of occupancy requests to ensure they meet right-of-way specifications and comply with relevant state laws and regulations. The employee will also be responsible for identifying the necessary requirements for restoration, bonding, and insurance. This role will involve various construction inspection activities related to the issuance of highway occupancy permits, as well as monitoring ongoing work. Inspections of all occupancy sites will be conducted prior to the start of work, during the execution of activities, and upon completion to confirm that permit conditions are met and qualifications are maintained. Additionally, the employee will be tasked with keeping detailed occupancy records and files for the County, safeguarding historical roadway right-of-way plans to verify existing widths, preparing both routine and special reports, and performing any other duties as required.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements:
  • This particular position requires possession of a Class C non-commercial driver's license.
