JOB SUMMARY

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist plays a key role in promoting a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement within our transformer manufacturing facility. This role supports daily operations by ensuring EHS policies, programs, and procedures are in place and aligned with regulatory standards and company values. The EHS Specialist partners with plant leadership and employees at all levels to foster a proactive approach to workplace safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
Additionally, this role will assist in conducting studies and investigations to ensure compliance with government safety and health laws, standards, and regulations, and to recommend improvements based on findings.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine safety audits, job safety analyses (JSAs), and environmental inspections to proactively identify risks in areas such as high-voltage testing, chemical handling, and confined space operations.
  • Ensure that Physical Stress Index evaluations and position-specific JSAs are completed and maintained, with a focus on ergonomic risks, physical demands, and occupational exposure hazards.
  • Maintain and update regulatory documentation including SDS management, OSHA 300 logs, waste disposal manifests, and environmental permit requirements.
  • Coordinate and lead Safety Task Teams, collaborating with Process Engineers, Management, and Supervisors through workshops to develop and implement risk reduction initiatives.
  • Implement and support EHS programs to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations relevant to transformer manufacturing.
  • Conduct or assist in studies and investigations related to workplace hazards, incidents, and exposure risks to ensure legal compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Lead or support incident and near-miss investigations; conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs on key topics including electrical safety (LOTO, arc flash), confined space entry, chemical handling, respiratory protection, and environmental compliance.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in EHS regulations; communicate impacts and recommend updates to facility practices.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Maintenance, and Production teams to ensure safe design and modification of equipment and processes.
  • Participate in safety committees, behavior-based safety programs, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Support regulatory inspections and represent the facility during audits or agency visits as needed.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, and environmental permitting requirements, particularly as they relate to high-voltage equipment, dielectric fluids, and confined space protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience in incident investigation, hazard analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions; familiarity with root cause analysis methods such as 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, and TapRooT.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and EHS software systems (e.g., Intelex, Enablon, VelocityEHS, or similar platforms).
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or OSHA 30/510 are a plus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required Education / Experience

  • Associates/Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of EHS experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting; experience in transformer or electrical component manufacturing strongly preferred.

Preferred Education / Experience

  • Previous work in environmental or safety compliance

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Key Working Relationships

Operations Management, including plant Supervision, Quality, Planning, etc. Shop and office employees. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Must be able to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands

Must be able to walk, stand, sit, stoop, squat, and kneel for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

This role is primarily based on the shop floor, with additional time spent in an office environment within a large manufacturing campus.

Some travel may be required for training or support of other company facilities.
