Materials Science and Engineering

Job Description

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology invites candidates for the position of Department Chair and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering with Tenure.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers ABET accredited B.S. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering and Ceramic Engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ceramic Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. The department is starting a new B.S. program in Semiconductor Engineering in the fall of 2025.

The Department currently has 21 full-time faculty (16 T/TT faculty, two NTT teaching faculty and three NTT Research faculty) and 5 full-time staff members. Five of those faculty members are pre-tenure assistant professors, so we are especially interested in candidates who are willing and able to mentor early-career faculty through the promotion and tenure process.

The Department is a research leader at Missouri University of Science and Technology. The Peaslee Steel Manufacturing Research Center is led by the Department. Other research strengths include materials for extreme environments, specifically ultra-high temperature ceramics, critical minerals, glass, cementitious materials, and computational material science. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated leadership to grow our research enterprise.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, or a closely related field and hold a tenured faculty appointment at a R1 university. Other requirements include a strong publication record and evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A commitment to student success.
  • An internationally recognized reputation in metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Administrative experience at or above the program or department level.
  • A strong record of government and/or industry funding.
  • A willingness to travel for the benefit of the department, including alumni development.
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills and an ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Ability to represent the department in both academic and industry research settings.
  • Evidence of fostering interdisciplinary research/education and mentoring of students, staff, and faculty.
  • A demonstrated record of ethical performance.

COLLEGE of ENGINEERING & COMPUTING (CEC)
Missouri S&T's College of Engineering and Computing is the largest of three colleges at S&T, accounting for approximately 80% of the total enrollment (about 4,500 undergraduates and 800 graduate students). The college includes more than 170 ranked faculty members who serve in 16 undergraduate programs, all with master's and doctoral equivalents organized into nine academic departments. The college recently added a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering and a Ph.D. in bioengineering, both starting in fall 2024.
